Levee Safety Program

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) helps plan, design, build, maintain, monitor, and modify levees through the Levee Safety Program.

Levees are one of many measures used throughout the nation to address flooding. There are more than 7,000 levees across the United States that help keep water away from communities, business, farms, and people.

USACE is responsible for 1,600 levees and works in partnership with levee sponsors to ensure they continue to reduce flood risk to people, businesses, critical infrastructure, and the environment.

About Levees

Levees are one of many tools communities use to address flooding. Constructed along waterways, made of many materials, and built to various heights – each levee looks different but works to keep water away from communities, critical infrastructure, and people. About The Levee Safety Program

The National Levee Database captures all known levees in the United States. It provides users with the ability to search for specific data about levees and serves as a national resource to support awareness and preparedness around flooding.

The National Levee Safety Program incorporates the National Levee Safety Guidelines, Integrated Levee Management, and National Levee Database and Data Collection resources as a framework for managing levee systems.

This video provides an overview of the recently updated National Levee Database, operated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Familiarize yourself with the system and take a look at what’s new.

The National Levee Safety Program Toolbox is intended to help decision makers, community members, and levee sponsors better understand levee design, construction, operation and maintenance, and preparedness.

The Levee Safety Program Guidance describes policies for carrying out the Levee Safety Program and the USACE’s role in managing federally authorized levees. It also details the roles and responsibilities of Levee Sponsors.

When needed, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is prepared to provide emergency response and assistance activities under the Flood Control and Coastal Emergencies appropriation authorized by Public Law 84-99.
