USACE Galveston District nears completion of levee safety inspections

GALVESTON, Texas (Sep. 10, 2012) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District is nearing completion of a comprehensive evaluation of seven federally-constructed levees in Alice, Freeport, Lynchburg, Matagorda, Port Arthur, Texas City and Three Rivers, Texas, as part of the Corps’ Levee Safety Program.

Craney Island mosquito spraying scheduled

NORFOLK -- The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Portsmouth will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Aug. 27, at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties and the north Churchland area (Route 164) in Portsmouth, Va.

17 Central Valley levee systems lose eligibility for federal rehab assistance

A total of 17 levee systems in or near Sacramento, Stockton, Chester, and Knights Landing and Gustine are now ineligible for federal rehabilitation assistance after a temporary agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state of California extending eligibility for deficient levees expired in June.

Higher headquarters observes how Cumberland River Basin supported Greater Mississippi River System during 2011 flood fight

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 27, 2012) – When the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers experienced a flood of record in the spring of 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District supported the flood fight by holding back water at its dams in the Cumberland River Basin reservoir system.

Division chief uses national team membership to write national policy, help district

It’s not every day a district employee gets to be involved with creating national policy. Michael Bart, the district’s chief of engineering and construction, was given that opportunity starting in September 2007, when he was asked to serve as the team lead of the Corps’ new Levee Safety Policy and Procedures Team. He had just finished a seven-month assignment at the Corps’ Hurricane Protection Office in New Orleans as the deputy for execution support and had been assisting with the Corps’ Dam Safety Program for a couple of years when he agreed to serve in this role.
