Kick Off of Dyke Marsh Restoration Project, Largest Remaining Freshwater Wetlands in the Washington Metropolitan Area

The Baltimore District and the National Park Service will begin small-scale geotechnical drilling at Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, the week of Oct. 19. This investigation is in preparation for a proposed interagency project to restore up to 100 acres of freshwater tidal marsh within the 485-acre Dyke Marsh. A 2009 study of Dyke Marsh by the NPS and the U.S. Geological Survey found that this unique ecosystem would be entirely lost by 2035 without restoration efforts. Dyke Marsh is home to more than 300 species of plants and 270 species of birds - including the only known breeding population of marsh wrens in the region.

Craney Island mosquito spraying scheduled for Oct. 13

The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015 at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties, and the Churchland area in Portsmouth.

Gathright Dam pulse release underway

At 6 a.m. today, operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia began conducting a pulse release. The pulse will gradually increase and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second by 9 a.m. The maximum surge will last two hours, begin to gradually decrease at 11 a.m., and return to 240 cfs by 1:30 p.m.

Gathright Dam officials cancel pulse release

Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have canceled Wednesday's pulse release at Gathright Dam. The Norfolk District, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, determined that recent rainfall eliminated the need for the second planned pulse release of the year.

Controlled flood release ends at Gathright Dam

Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will end its controlled flood storage release today. Beginning this morning at 9 a.m., operators at the dam will begin to reduce the release, which is currently at 1,530 cubic feet per second, to 600 cubic feet per second by 11 a.m.
