  • Dredging project to cause temporary river closure near Keithsburg, Illinois

    Beginning today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, will temporarily close the main channel of the Mississippi River at river mile 425.7 in Pool 18 near Keithsburg, Illinois, to move dredged material from Willow Bar Island to the Iowa shore. The closure is anticipated to last three weeks and will impact navigation.

    Updated: Fort Peck release reductions was incorrectly reported as Sept 6 and has been corrected to Sept. 16. Drought conditions, particularly in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa (upper Basin), are persisting. Per the Master Manual and the Sept. 1 System storage check, winter releases from Gavins Point Dam will be 12,000 cubic feet per second, as part of the overall water conservation measures. “Reservoir inflows in August were much lower than average. We expect below-average inflows into the System through the rest of 2021,” said John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Missouri River Basin Water Management Division.

  • Mississippi River Visitor Center open to public for viewing of large-scale paddle event, Floatzilla

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, invites the public to the Mississippi River Visitor Center at Locks and Dam 15 in Rock Island, Illinois, to view hundreds of paddlers locking through during the annual Floatzilla paddle event, August 21. The Visitor Center will open at 9 a.m. and paddlers will be passing though the locks throughout the morning and early afternoon hours. Facemasks are required to be worn while inside the facility.

  • Fleet executes major surgery at Montgomery

    Crewmembers and maintenance operators for the Medium Capacity Fleet begin major work at the Montgomery Locks and Dam, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, on the Ohio River in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Aug. 2, 2021. The medium fleet crew began work at Montgomery L/D in late July, and they will spend approximately a month to replace and repair components of the gate system and valves.

  • Army Corps, State to host public meeting on Ocean City Inlet projects

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District (USACE), in coordination with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Worcester County, is hosting a hybrid public meeting Aug. 17, 2021, at the Worcester County Library – Berlin Branch at 13 Harrison Ave., from 7 – 8:30 p.m. This public meeting provides an opportunity to discuss two concurrent efforts: a navigation improvement project to address sediment accumulation in the Ocean City Inlet and a study on the scour hole near Homer Gudelsky Park.

  • Drought conditions persist in the upper Missouri River Basin

    Drought conditions continue to impact the upper Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa (upper Basin). July runoff in the upper Basin was 34% of average. July runoff above Fort Peck Dam was the lowest in 123 years of record-keeping. The updated 2021 upper Basin runoff forecast is 14.6 million acre-feet (MAF), 57% of average. If realized, this runoff amount would be the 10th driest year in the upper Basin since 1898. System storage on August 1 was 53.9 MAF, 2.2 MAF below the base of the Annual Flood Control and Multiple Use Zone. System storage is expected to decline further into the Carryover Multiple Use Zone during the remainder of 2021.

  • Corps announces additional temporary closures at Hastings lock and dam to replace nearly 80-year-old gates

    ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will have additional temporary closures at Lock and Dam 2 in Hastings, Minnesota, August 3 and 5 to properly align and seal the lock chamber’s new miter gates. The lock will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Corps set to move dredged material, urges caution near work site

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is scheduled to begin moving approximately 50,000 cubic yards of river sand, or dredged material, from the Dakota Island Placement Site, near Dakota, Minnesota, to the Trempealeau, Wisconsin, Placement Site, which is about 8 miles away.
