    Mother Nature can be comforting and calm but this year it seems like she used our first, middle and last name as she scolded (or scalded) us … “Pacific North [emphasis added] West, what in the world were you thinking?!” … for punching our hypothetical little sister (California). Our punishment has been drought, record-breaking temperatures, wildfires and extremely dry conditions throughout the region. Even though the early part of this summer was a scorching hot nightmare, north western Oregon is fortunate to have a consistent flow of water – thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ system of dams and reservoirs in the Willamette Valley.

    Purpose: This US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) National Regional Sediment Management Technical Note (RSM-TN) documents the effects of increased sediment loading to the Missouri River on bed elevations in the lower 498 miles. This was accomplished using a one-dimensional (1D) HEC-RAS 5.0.7 sediment model.
  • PUBLICATION NOTICE: Contribution of Two Eroding Banks to Multipurpose Pool Sedimentation at a Midwestern Reservoir

    Abstract: This US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) National Regional Sediment Management Technical Note (RSM-TN) documents the sediment contribution of two eroding banks to multipurpose pool sedimentation at Kanopolis Lake, KS. The analysis is based on a 2009 LIDAR and an August 2019 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)-based structure from motion survey.
  • Upper Savannah reservoirs enter Drought Level 1

    SAVANNAH, Ga. –The three reservoirs on the Savannah River operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers declared the first drought level Tuesday in response to the pool elevation at J. Strom Thurmond Lake dipping below 326.0 feet above mean sea level (ft-msl). Entering Trigger Level 1 activates the Corps’ drought management plan which conserves water in the reservoirs by reducing the outflows from the Thurmond Dam.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is informing the public that its flood risk management reservoirs in the Mahoning River Valley are in the process of returning to normal summer levels following last weekend’s high water event.
  • Imminent Activation of Arkabutla Lake Dam Spillway

    VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District notified local authorities and emergency management personnel April 16 that the activation of the spillway at Arkabutla Lake Dam, located 35 miles north of Marks, Mississippi, is imminent. Arkabutla is one of four lakes in Mississippi maintained and operated by the Vicksburg District. The district’s four flood control reservoirs – Enid, Grenada, Sardis and Arkabutla lakes – are used to hold runoff, or excess rainwater, as a flood-prevention measure.
