Vicksburg District to reopen select beaches and recreation areas at Mississippi lakes beginning July 6
Vicksburg, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District will reopen select beaches and recreation areas at its Mississippi lakes – Arkabutla Lake, Sardis Lake, Enid Lake and Grenada Lake – and incorporate preventative health measures beginning July 6.

Berm construction completes last repair phase for dam rehabilitation
SILVER POINT, Tenn. (July 1, 2020) – Officials celebrated completion of the last phase of repairs for the $353 million Center Hill Dam Safety Rehabilitation Project today where the Corps of Engineers recently finished constructing a roller compacted concrete berm to reinforce the auxiliary dam at Center Hill Lake, a secondary earthen embankment that fills a low area in the landscape just east of the main dam.

Corps announces public comment and webinar on planned deviation from Lake O Regulation Schedule to reduce risk from Harmful Algal Blooms
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District, announces public comment on the Draft Revised Supplemental Environmental Assessment (EA) and Proposed Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the planned deviation from the water control plan for Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades Agricultural Area, also known as the Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule (LORS 2008) in order to reduce risk from Harmful Algal Blooms. A webinar to provide information regarding the proposed planned deviation is planned for 1 p.m. on July 21. Public comments are due July 30.

This Fourth of July weekend, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will participate in Operation Dry Water, a coordinated three-day effort to heighten awareness of the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Army Corps to repair stilling basin at Foster J. Sayers Dam
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, will begin a $3.2 million effort to repair the stilling basin at Foster J. Sayers Dam in the coming weeks. The dam is currently operational, and this work is preventative maintenance to ensure that it can continue to provide flood risk management to downstream communities for years to come.

Corps Publishes RECOVER Interim Goals and Targets Report
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District published an updated version of the RECOVER (REstoration COordination & VERification) Interim Goals and Targets Report July 1 using improved models and data not available in the initial report. The report is available online at www.saj.usace.army.mil/IGIT, and Corps experts will be hosting two webinars for interested stakeholders to review the detailed changes to the Interim Goals and Targets. Webinars will begin at 10 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. July 15, 2020.

Knauss Fellow, Engineering With Nature initiative a perfect match
To Samuel Fielding, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Engineering With Nature (EWN) initiative seemed like a perfect fit. As a prospective John A. Knauss Marine Fellow, Fielding was searching for a host organization where he could utilize his interdisciplinary education in economics, international relations and biology. His doctorate research was focused on the economics of coastal adaption and the socioeconomics of coastal hazards within flood insurance markets.
