  • MacArthur Lock closing for seasonal repair, maintenance

    AULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Soo Locks’ MacArthur Lock will close for the Navigation Season 7 a.m. Dec. 17, 2023, through April 24, 2024, to perform dam safety inspections and routine maintenance. The Poe Lock will remain open until Jan. 15, 2024, or until commercial traffic ceases, whichever occurs first. The Soo Locks operating season is fixed by federal regulation (33 CFR 207.440). “The 800-foot-long MacArthur Lock, built in 1943, is 80 years old; the maintenance period is critical to keeping the lock in operation during the shipping season,” Maintenance Branch Chief Nicholas Pettit said.
  • Dredging to Begin at Sandusky Harbor: Notice to All Boaters

    Dredging of the federal navigation channel in Sandusky Harbor by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Michigan-based The King Co., Inc., will begin Sunday, Sept. 17. Recreational boaters who routinely use the channel should take caution and be aware of changes within the channel marked by buoys. Boaters are asked to go slow and stay away from marine equipment, stay clear of the contractor’s temporary pipeline, and stay out of the perimeter of the sediment placement area.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District (USACE) will begin dredging operations in Ludington and Pentwater harbors on Lake Michigan on Friday, Aug. 4. The projects represent about $1.25 million in dredging to keep the federal navigation system safe and open for commercial and recreational traffic.
  • New Lock at the Soo: Unlocking the Great Lakes

    SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich., – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District works on unlocking the Great Lakes by providing a much-needed resiliency at the Soo Locks with the construction of the New Lock at the Soo. The New Lock at the Soo will be the same dimensions as the Poe Lock, 1,200 feet long, 110 feet wide and 30 feet deep. Often called the “linchpin” of the Great Lakes navigation system, the Soo Locks are located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan between the upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario. The Soo Locks enable bulk carrier vessels to safely bypass the swift-moving St. Marys River rapids where the water drops 21 feet over bedrock in a three-quarter mile stretch. The St. Marys River is the only connecting waterway between Lakes Superior and the lower Great Lakes. Before the first lock was constructed in 1798, trade canoes had to be unloaded and portaged around the rapids, taking roughly six weeks to complete. Today, the locks operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 42 weeks of the year allowing government, commercial and private vessels to transit safely and more efficiently.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $3.85 million contract to Illinois-based Great Lakes Dock and Materials, L.L.C. on March 31 for repairs to the Rochester Harbor East Pier in Rochester, New York. Repairs will ensure the pier, along with its adjacent federal navigation channel, continue to provide safe passage and refuge for commercial and recreational vessels between the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $3.3 million contract to Rochester-based Crane-Hogan Structural Systems on March 22 for critical repairs to the west pier of Little Sodus Bay in Fair Haven, New York. The west pier suffered degradation and damage in recent years. Repairs will ensure the pier, along with its adjacent federal navigation channel, continue to provide safe passage and refuge for commercial fishermen and recreational boaters between Little Sodus Bay, Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes.
  • USACE Buffalo District Announces 2022 Operations Schedule for Black Rock Lock

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District is announcing the Black Rock Lock operations schedule for the 2022 navigation season. The Black Rock Lock is one of three lock systems operated and maintained by USACE on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes and saw more than 2,600 vessels and 60,000 metric tons of commerce pass through its walls in fiscal year 2021.
