  • John W. Flannagan Additional Whitewater Releases

    Huntington, W.Va. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will add two additional days of releases from John W. Flannagan Reservoir in Haysi, Va., for the 2019 Russell Fork whitewater season.
  • 2015 Whitewater Releases for Gauley and Russell Fork Rivers

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announces the 2015 Whitewater schedule of releases for the Summersville and John W. Flannagan Lakes. The releases are made in conjuction with the normal drawdown of the associated reservoir to its Winter pool. The releases are considered by whitewater enthusiasts who frequent the Gauley and Russell Fork Rivers to be optimal times for whitewater related activities.
  • Summersville Whitewater

    It’s a thundering sound that is rarely heard along the Gauley River these days. Since the hydropower plant went into operation in 2001 at Summersville Dam, most of the water flowing through the dam and into the river has quietly been pumped through the power plant - but to celebrate the beginning of the short whitewater season (and just for fun), the morning of Sept. 5, 2014, one of the giant Howell-Bunger valves was opened and a roaring jet of cold water greeted the rafters as they started their journey down the river.

    Controlled releases of water will be made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, from Blackwater Dam in Webster and Salisbury, New Hampshire, April 26-27, 2014 to provide adequate river flows for recreational canoeing, kayaking and rafting, according to Corps of Engineers officials.
  • Army Corps to hold public comment meeting for F.E. Walter Dam recreation plan

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District will host a meeting to review the 2013 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan and solicit feedback for next year’s plan. The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Holiday Inn Express in White Haven, Pa. (intersection of Rt 940 and Northeast Extension of the Pa Turnpike).
  • Army Corps updates water release schedule at Francis E. Walter Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers Philadelphia District has updated the recreation plan for the Francis E. Walter Dam. The Corps updated the plan, which states whitewater and fisheries releases will be added if enough water storage is accumulated in the reservoir. Wet conditions in the spring and summer have allowed the Corps to add the first four increments of the plan

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District will host a meeting to review the 2012 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan and solicit feedback for next year’s plan. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Holiday Inn Express in White Haven, Pa.
