• Mississippi River Commission cancels Upper Mississippi River portion of low water inspection trip but still plans to conduct Lower Mississippi River portion

    Due to the rising cases of COVID, the Mississippi River Commission (MRC) has canceled the Upper Mississippi River portion of its annual low water inspection trip on board the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI, which was scheduled for August 15-20, 2021. The health and safety for people is a priority during this critical time in our nation. The MRC still intends to conduct the Lower Mississippi River portion of the low water inspection trip and public hearings scheduled for August 22-27, 2021. Four public meetings have been scheduled aboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI in select towns along the river.
  • Ray Behrens/Frank Russell Campgrounds Will Re-Open July 26, 2021

    Mark Twain Lake, July 23, 2021 – Storm debris removal has been completed in the Ray Behrens and Frank Russell Campgrounds. The Campgrounds will re-open on July 26, 2021 at 5:00 P.M. Reservations will be available for the Ray Behrens, Frank Russell, and Indian Creek Campground starting on July 26. The Ray Behrens and Frank Russell Campgrounds accumulated large wood debris piles inside of the recreation areas. The wood debris piles continue to smolder but the majority of each pile has been burned. Mark Twain Lake Staff will allow the areas to burn off over the weekend and extinguish the fires on Monday, July 26. We ask that everyone avoid the debris piles.   • Hydrocarbon Treatability Study of Antarctica Soil with Fenton’s Reagent

    Abstract: The study objectives were to determine the effectiveness of Fenton’s Reagent and Modified Fenton’s Reagent in reducing Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations in petroleum-contaminated soil from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Comparisons of the contaminated soils were made, and a treatability study was completed and documented. This material was presented at the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences Foundation (AEHS) 30th Annual International Conference on Soil, Water, Energy, and Air (Virtual) on March 25, 2021.

    As the Japan Engineer District’s colors passed from Command Sgt. Maj. Douglas W. Galick to Col. Thomas J. Verell, Jr., to Brig. Gen. Kirk Gibbs, and then to Col. Gary S. Bonham in the time honored Army tradition, Col. Bonham took command of Japan Engineer District becoming their 21st Command Engineer July 20, at Camp Zama, Japan.

    Mr. Jaime A. Pinkham, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, visited the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District from July 7 to 9 to learn more about the District’s programs and operations.

    ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and Metro Flood Diversion Authority hosted Jaime A. Pinkham, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, in Fargo, North Dakota, today to tour the Fargo, N.D. /Moorhead, Minn., flood risk management project.
  • Northwestern Division transfers command; Accomplished scholar-soldier takes over largest USACE division

    Brig. Gen. Peter Helmlinger transferred command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Northwestern Division to Col. Geoff Van Epps today in a ceremony at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. Van Epps comes to the Northwestern Division from the Office of the Chief of Engineers in Washington, D.C., where he served as director of the Pentagon office of the Chief of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon. “I’m very pleased to be included in the story of this unit along with all its stellar employees, past and present,” said Van Epps. “Together, we’ll continue to develop our people, collaborate with our partners, and deliver the program for our country and corps.”
