Area Army Corps parks extend temporary openings during shutdown

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, has extended the date of how long their owned and operated lakes can temporarily remain open to October 14. This is an extension from the original projected date of October 7. This means that their projects throughout the Susquehanna and Potomac River Basins can continue full operations for another week despite a lapse in federal funding. Corps-operated campgrounds and day-use areas will remain open during this time and all reservations will be honored.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 2, 2013) – Due to the government shutdown, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is closing all of its campgrounds and day-use parks at noon on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013. The district previously announced it intended to keep these areas open as originally scheduled. However, support to recreation areas can no longer be sustained as the district progresses through its orderly shutdown.

The 2012 monsoonal rain season brought runoff which carred debris, choking the culvert under Galisteo Dam's access road. Safety concerns prompted the District to save the road. However the necessary fix wasn’t going to be cheap, especially in this era of budget belt-tightening.
