• Corps’ Vicksburg District Begins Lowering Water Level on Ouachita River

    Vicksburg, Miss…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District began lowering the water level on the Ouachita River on July 5 to inspect the Columbia Lock and Dam. In an effort to ensure public safety, the Corps evaluated water depths at the seven boat ramps based on a 3’ fall. As a result, the seven boat ramps operated by the Corps within the Columbia Pool (Riverton, Prairion, Bawcomville, Moon Lake, Sterlington, Finch Bayou and Felsenthal South) will be closed at 12:00 on July 9. The Riverton swim beach will be closed at 12:00 on July 10. The areas will be closed to protect your safety and prevent possible damages to your boats. Please do not move or go-around any of the barricades.

  • Corps to suspend flows from Lake Okeechobee

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will suspend water releases from Lake Okeechobee to the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Estuaries effective Monday morning. The Corps will pause discharges at 7 a.m. on Monday to allow water managers to conduct a full assessment of system conditions. While no water will be released from Lake Okeechobee, the Corps will continue to allow runoff from rain that accumulates in the Caloosahatchee or St. Lucie basins to pass through downstream structures.

  • Corps’ Vicksburg District Inspects Columbia Lock and Dam

    Vicksburg, Miss… The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District is currently inspecting the Columbia Lock and Dam located on the Ouachita River approximately seven miles upstream of Columbia, Louisiana. USACE is inspecting the lock and dam for deficiencies after identifying seepage and sand boils near the structure and voids under the lock wall in early July. The inspection will be used to inform ongoing remediation work focused on repairing the structure and minimizing future risks.
  • USACE releases draft report on Lake Okeechobee Watershed study

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District is accepting comments on the Draft Integrated Project Implementation Report (PIR) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Lake Okeechobee Watershed Restoration Project (LOWRP). USACE proposes an above-ground wetland attenuation feature (WAF) and several aquifer storage & recovery (ASR) wells in an area north of the lake. The proposed plan also calls for restoration of 5,300 acres of wetlands in the area. The draft document was released for review today (July 6). USACE will accept comments through August 20.
