To prepare the site for the thermal treatment technology ITSI Gilbane dewatered the Flame Pit Area behind LSB2 prior to backfillling it. Before dewatering, they collected a surface water sample and then monitored for contaminants as water was discharged to the ground outside the pit area to evaporate. With the go-ahead, they backfilled the FPA with 6,500 cu yds of clean sandy clay loam soil.
