STURGIS vessel en route to Brownsville for final shipbreaking and recycling

GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ STURGIS vessel left this morning for the Port of Brownsville for her final journey. In two to three days, she will arrive at the International Shipbreaking Limited facility where she will be dismantled for recycling. The vessel is being towed from Galveston where it has undergone radiological decommissioning that included the safe removal of all components of the deactivated nuclear reactor and all associated radioactive waste that was formerly onboard the STURGIS.

STURGIS leaving the James River Fleet after 37 years

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to start towing the STURGIS barge 1,750 miles to Galveston, Texas, today. The trip to the Port of Galveston will take approximately three weeks and will comply with the U.S. Coast Guard’s regulations.

Corps awards $34 million contract to decommission, dismantle nuclear reactor; Galveston selected as decommissioning site

GALVESTON, Texas (April 4, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District awarded a $34,663,325 contract to CB&I Federal Services LLC (CB&I) for the decommissioning, dismantling and disposal of the MH-1A nuclear reactor, which is installed on the STURGIS barge. The STURGIS will be relocated in September 2014 to Galveston, Texas, for decommissioning.
