  • Breaking ground: U.S. Army Corps and Port of Virginia Spearhead Major Atlantic Ocean Channel Deepening

    Armed with shovels in hand, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District along with its partners, Virginia Port Authority and City of Virginia Beach broke ground during a ceremony for the commencement of the Atlantic Ocean Channel Phase II on Thursday, April 25, celebrating the commencement of construction for the final Norfolk Harbor Deepening contract along with the upcoming beach nourishment projects at Resort and Croatan Beaches in Virginia Beach.

    The Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, recently implemented multiple projects to restore aquatic habitat along 2,412 linear feet of the Buffalo River’s hardened shoreline. These projects incorporated natural and nature-based design features that provided engineering functions through environmental means to create soft shoreline habitats.
  • Braddock Bay Restoration: The last piece of the Rochester Embayment AOC puzzle

    To address the gradual loss of a historic barrier beach and the erosion of over 100 acres of wetlands at Lake Ontario’s Braddock Bay, a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative project team has implemented Engineering With Nature principles to provide a sustainable restoration solution. This project completed the last management action necessary for the future delisting of the Rochester Embayment Area of Concern.
