    As part of NASA's ARCSIX research program, U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory scientists Dr. Chris Polashenski, Tricia Nelsen and Roy Hessner engineered and deployed specially modified, sensor-laden buoys into the Arctic Ocean north of Canada and Greenland near the North Pole in an effort to help NASA better understand Arctic sea ice melting.

  • ERDC supports NASA’s mission to Mars

    In the 1960s during the Cold War, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Region Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) designed a device, commonly referred to as a Rodriguez well, or Rodwell, to harvest water under the ice in Greenland and Antarctica to sustain U.S. facilities by providing water for drinking, hygiene and other needs. Presently, NASA is working with CRREL to assess whether that same technology can provide water for human-inhabited research stations on Mars.

    As part of the Women’s Equality Day celebration at the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, Aug. 22, three women at the Senior Executive Service level talked about overcoming obstacles, following the examples strong female role models have set for them, and embracing lessons and opportunities throughout their careers. The discussion panel consisted of Audrey Robinson, Esq., chief of counsel at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center; Dr. Juanita M. Christensen, executive director of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation and Missile Center; and Karen Pane, director of Human Resources for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
