  • In the fast lane: Partnership helps collegiate motorsport team bring home trophy

    Many kids dream of one day becoming a race car driver. Few will actually achieve it, but for those who have a knack for science and technology, designing a race car might be a more achievable goal – a chance to live life in the fast lane. For students involved in Powercat Motorsports at Kansas State University, this dream is a reality. Powercat Motorsports is the university’s Society of Engineers Formula Race team. Open to any student enrolled at Kansas State University, the team designs and builds a brand-new formula one race car every year. They compete with their car at various events throughout the year, but the biggest competition occurs at Michigan International Speedway.

  • Tuttle Creek Lake temporarily closes stilling basin due to construction projects

    Officials will temporarily close the stilling basin at Tuttle Creek Lake in Manhattan, Kansas, due to two construction projects at the lake. The stilling basin is set to temporarily close on May 28, 2024, and will be closed for three to four months, June through September, while the first construction project, a rock overlay project, also known as riprap, is completed. However, the duration of the project will be dependent on weather and the level of the lake.

    The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has prepared a draft environmental assessment, Finding of No Significant Impact and Section 404(b)(1) Evaluation for the Water Injection Dredging Study and Demonstration Project. USACE is seeking public input on the environmental assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact.

  • Dwindling capacity at Tuttle Creek Reservoir calls for an urgent and innovative solution

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is no stranger to sediment build-up issues. The organization is responsible for maintaining and managing thousands of miles of inland and intracoastal waterways, channels, ports and harbors with a dredging budget of more than $1.7 billion in fiscal year 2023 alone. Presently, USACE researchers are taking on a slightly different challenge and investigating new methods to diminish the accumulation of sediment in lakes and reservoirs caused by dams.

  • Public invited to attend meeting for Water Control Manual updates in Waverly, Missouri

    A public meeting to discuss the updates to the Water Control Manuals for dams on the Lower Kansas River in Waverly, Missouri on August 17, 2023, will be held by the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more how USACE uses the Water Control Manuals at each of its reservoirs, how the Missouri River both influences and is impacted, how these updates will be accomplished and to provide their input.

  • Public invited to meetings scheduled for upcoming Water Control Manual updates

    Updates to Water Control Manuals and reviews of the Water Control Plans for Milford, Tuttle Creek, Perry and Clinton Dams and Reservoirs will be the subject of a series of public meetings held by the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, from early to mid-August 2023. The public is invited to learn more about how USACE uses the Water Control Manuals at each of its reservoirs, how the updates will be done and to provide their input. The meetings are being publicized together because many people visit more than one reservoir in a year or have interests in water resources encompassing more than one location.

  • Tuttle Creek Lake closes River Pond Road for scheduled maintenance

    Tuttle Creek Lake, near Manhattan, Kansas, will be closing River Pond Road starting June 12, 2023, for scheduled maintenance. Work is scheduled to take place throughout the area from June 12 to July 7, 2023, but is subject to change due to weather. Any changes to the dates of closure will be posted as soon as they are made available by the contractor. Public access to the stilling basin or “tubes” area, as well as shelters three and four, will be impacted during this time.

  • Tuttle Creek Cove campground to close for maintenance

    Tuttle Creek Lake, near Manhattan, Kansas, will be closing Tuttle Creek Cove campground starting April 10, 2023. Work is scheduled to take place throughout the campground from April 10 – May 19, 2023, but is subject to change due to weather. Any changes to the dates of closure will be posted as soon as they are made available by the contractor. The entire park will be closed for public use for the duration of the work, which includes the boat ramp and pedestrian access. Work will also impact Stockdale Campground and portions of Outlet Park, including the stilling basin or “tubes” area. Dates for work on these areas are not yet known but will be posted as soon as they are made available.

  • Nearly 90,000 tons of rock to be placed on Tuttle Creek Dam through BIL funded project

    Nearly 90,000 tons of rock is scheduled to be placed on the face of Tuttle Creek Dam, near Manhattan, Kansas, within the next couple years to repair damages from the 2019 high-water event. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, received funding from both the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, or DRSAA, and from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, or BIL, for the $15.5 million project. Receiving additional funding through the BIL has allowed USACE to deliver the project faster than expected.

  • Temporary closures announced for upcoming construction activity at Tuttle Creek Lake

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Lake is announcing that the stilling basin area - locally known as the “tubes” - as well as Outlet Park Shelter #3 is scheduled to be closed to all public access from October 18-22, 2021, depending on weather conditions effecting the planned work.
