Louisville District Emergency Management conducts flood fight training

Residents who reside along the 981 miles of the Ohio River and its tributaries are no strangers to severe weather. The risk for flood in these areas increase when a location experiences heavy rain, the area has poor drainage or the soil composition is dense. Flood fight training is one way the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville district prepares for these severe weather events.

USACE delivered 120,000 sandbags to flood affected communities over the past two weeks and completed work filling levee breaches caused by last week’s storms in Whatcom County, including Rainbow Slough Levee near Ferndale Road.

Flood Preparation and Flood Preparedness

Flood preparedness is always a top priority for the Kansas City District, because the frequency and scale of flooding are very hard to predict we try to follow a consistent process from year to year. We will begin updating our internal flood fight teams early this year. Personnel turnover somewhat drives the type and scale of training that we provide internally. Another key consideration for training and exercises is the frequency of flood response by the District. The District noted no appreciable flooding for the period from 1998 to 2007. As a result, we were more reliant on training and exercises to ensure preparedness of District personnel.
