PUBLIC NOTICE FOR POSITIONS FILLED UNDER DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY (DHA) FOR:

Certain Competitive Service Positions covered by Section 9905

Position Title:  Maintenance Mechanic

Series/Grade:  WG-4749-10

Full Performance Level:  WG-10

Duty Location:  Official Duty Station is the Ensley Engineer Yard

Hourly Salary Range:  $25.58- $29.85

Work Schedule:  Full-Time

Appointment Type:  Permanent

Travel Requirement:   Temporary Duty Travel is 25% or more

Responsibilities/Duties: 

Serves as a Maintenance Mechanic assigned to the Yards and Docks Unit with the responsibility for the operation maintenance, inspection, and repair of a variety of fixed, portable and mobile systems, equipment and machinery including both land-based and marine applications at various facilities and locations.

Assists Pumping Plant operator at multiple pumping plant facilities which involves the electronic/electrical operation of mechanical and hydraulic systems to pump water and maintain specified water levels. The facilities include systems which include up to 4,000 HP diesel powered pumps, pump bay backflow gates, pump bay bulkhead gates, trash racks, vacuum breaker valves, vacuum pumps, sluice gates, and sump de-watering pumps; gravity bay service gates, emergency gates; and relief well pumps. May be required to work shifts and or/on weekends. Employee may be required to serve up to 3 or 4 months continuous TDY travel during work season for pump station operations.

Operates outboard motorboats. Operates bridge cranes to lift heavy equipment, parts, and supplies. Operates a variety of miscellaneous equipment including hydraulic lifts, portable dewatering pumps to pump out areas not serviced by sump dewatering pumps, electric air supply system compressors, front end loaders, and tilt bed cargo trucks.

Accomplishes regular maintenance, servicing and inspection in support of all plant operating equipment and facilities, structures, and grounds. Prepares periodic maintenance and inspection reports; and utilizes the Facilities and Equipment Maintenance (FEM) system to track and report maintenance activities.

Assists in repair and modifications of structures such as dredges, towboats, barges; and equipment such as tractors, draglines, and other heavy machinery. Performs major repairs such as disassembly of equipment, components, and replacement of bearings and shafts, reduction gears, pump shaft bearings, gages, pumps, cylinder liners, etc. Disassembles, diagnoses, and repairs portable pumps and compressors and accomplishes a similar level of repair to other fixed, portable, marine, and mobile equipment and machinery.

PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Schedule:  During Daylight Savings Months, typically March through October, this position works four 10-hour days each week beginning on Mondays.  During the rest of the year, the work week consists of five 8-hour days beginning on Mondays.

 

Physical Effort:

Must be physically able to do relatively heavy-lifting, (up to 50 pounds) and pulling, be able to stand or walk for periods of several hours, climb ladders and enter confined spaces. Equipment operation work requires heavy effort in pushing, pulling, depressing levers and brakes. Incumbent is subject to equipment vibration, jerking, and jolting motions.

 

Working Conditions:

Work is performed both inside and & outside. Inside work subjects the incumbent to noisy conditions, long periods of standing requiring the incumbent to remain constantly alert to the status of all operating equipment. Outside work subjects the incumbent to extremes of heat, cold, and weathering conditions. Repair and maintenance work subjects the incumbent to greasy and oily conditions with the potential for cuts, bruises and abrasions in conducting repairs. Incumbent must wear proper safety equipment when working in potentially hazardous situations; i.e., gloves, safety boots, goggles, hearing protection, life jackets, etc.

 

Conditions of Employment & Notes:

  • This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a da form 5019-R, "Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the drug abuse testing program," or a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an outboard motor boat operator's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a bridge crane operator's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift operator's license along with other heavy engineer equipment operator's licenses.
  • The pumping plants and other work activities may be conducted on weekdays, nights and weekends as well as holidays. The incumbent may be required to work nights and/or weekends.
  • May be required to serve up to 3 or 4 months continuous TDY travel during work season for pump station operations.
  • Must wear proper safety equipment when working in potentially hazardous situations; i.e., gloves, safety boots, goggles, hearing protection, life jackets, etc.
  • Must pass physical examination and drug screening test
