Combined Mohawk Dam and Zoar Levee Groundbreaking

Recently, a combined Mohawk Dam and Zoar Levee Groundbreaking Ceremony was held to mark the beginning of work on these two important projects. Congressman Gibbs joined Colonel Evers along with Mayor Scott C. Gordon, Village of Zoar and Craig W. Butler, Executive Director/Secretary Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District in celebrating the event.

The Zoar Levee DSM project consists of the design and installation of an Internal Erosion Interception Trench (IEIT) and small weighted filter berm along the Ball Field Reach and a reverse filter in the ponding area.  The IEIT is intended to arrest backward erosion piping that may have started.  The small weighted filter berm is required to prevent the initiation of backward erosion piping in the area between the landward levee toe and the IEIT.  The reverse filter is intended to prevent soil erosion from starting.

The Mohawk DSM project consists of two principle measures: a line of 10 new relief wells between Sta. 7+50 and 15+00, located downstream of the existing relief wells and a selective upsizing of the seepage collector system.  The relief wells will reduce foundation pressures in the Potential Failure Mode 5E exit location just downstream of the seepage berm. This will reduce the chance of initiating Backward Erosion Piping. The relief wells in this Recommended Management Plan will not only enhance the existing system where it is overwhelmed, but they will also reduce high pressures in the area toward the right abutment beyond the influence of the existing relief wells. Selective upsizing will enhance the efficiency of the seepage collection system by enlarging inadequately-sized pipes   and   re-routing   other   piping, reducing backup and eliminating pressurization.
