UPDATE: Jan. 13 John Day Dam oil spill amount increases after further inspection – now 65 gallons

Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Published Jan. 22, 2021

After continued inspections and repairs of failed equipment from a Jan. 13 oil loss, technicians at John Day Dam are now reporting the total loss oil to be 65 gallons. The original estimate (Jan. 13) was a loss of 25 gallons.

Ongoing investigations, since the time of the initial report, have identified two main unit generator systems failed. Corps staff identified the two systems as the thrust bearing cooler and the turbine guide bearing cooler.

The turbine remains out of service and isolated from the river to prevent any further losses.

Corps officials updated partner agencies, including the National Response Center, Oregon and Washington emergency management offices and the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission.
