Description
Project would address an emergency streambank protection problem at two locations in Worth Township, Woodford County, Illinois, where Ten Mile parallels Ten Mile Creek Road.
Background
Ten Mile Creek is a dry creek bed most of the year with the exception of during the spring, during high rainfall events or when the reservoir upstream released water. A small reservoir located upstream is maintained at certain pool elevation and releases high volumes of water as needed to maintain that elevation. It is thought that the creek may be running under the creek bed at times when it was dried up, but no digging has been done to prove/disprove this. It is estimated that there is water in the creek only about one-third of the year.
At the two sites, the bank has eroded to within 7 feet of the roadway. The bank drops off 25 to 35 feet to the creek bed below and is near vertical on the right descending bank at these two sites. The left descending bank at the two sites is more stepped up to the top of bank. One area of the left descending bank between the two sites has a shear drop off, again 25 to 35 feet high, with a sand bar deposited on the right descending bank. Both banks appear to have erosion. The material making up the bank and bed appeared to be sandy, but was very hard like it had been cemented. It was unclear if that is the nature of the material or if it is because the stream was dried up, or both. The stream bed was littered with areas of coarse sand, gravel, cobbles and larger rocks, apparently deposited by past high flows. The size of the stones ranged anywhere from 1 inch up to 12 inches or more.
Along the right descending bank at several locations there were steel I-beams driven into the stream bed near the bank. At some places, they were holding up trees that were falling, which was in turn keeping the bank from eroding further. Rapid streambank erosion along the outside of the stream meanders that is threatening Ten Mile Creek Road. The erosion is progressing more and more every year where it is very obvious to see the loss of land between the stream and the roadway.
Status
This is a potential new start. A letter of request has been received from the sponsor. The initial phase of work will be to complete a Federal Interest Determination. This project is awaiting funding.
