This winter a number of New York District construction projects are in full swing at the U.S Military Academy at West Point, north of New York City.New York District project engineer Timothy Pillsworth, responsible for overseeing the West Point Elementary School project said, “There’s a lot of good things happening here that’s helping the cadets,” adding, “New and renovated buildings and instructional areas are bringing us [West Point] into the 21st century.”
Barracks upgrade program
One significant initiative is modernizing barracks under the West Point Cadet Barracks Upgrade Program, involving renovation of nine existing or “legacy” cadet barracks and facilities. The New York District is delivering modernized living facilities that increase space and reduce operating costs.
Campus tour
A two-hour tour with 1st Lt. Jacob Cole, an engineer and West Point graduate, began with walking the halls of the new elementary school that opened in mid-January. The 95,552 square-foot state-of-the-art structure replaces an outdated building from the 1960’s.
Eisenhower Barracks
Project work includes repairs addressing interior configuration, energy conservation, and utility systems to provide modern living conditions. Architectural repairs address space deficiencies for programmed functions, i.e., storage, study rooms, offices, barrack rooms and restrooms addressing gender equality. Work is expected to be complete this spring.
Grant Barracks
A complete interior renovation includes: a) removing asbestos and all led-containing materials; b) roof and window replacement; c) restoration of historic items; d) exterior repairs to existing masonry; e) new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; and f) new furnishings. Renovations are nearly 70 percent complete. All projects are expected to be completed this spring.
Cyber Engineering Center
In the planning stages is the Cyber Engineering and Academic Center, a 136,000 square foot modern facility supporting West Point’s science, technology, engineering and math curriculum including laboratory and support space. The facility will include an adjacent multi-story parking facility with 450 spaces. Amenities include an electronic security system, electric-car charging stations, solar roof panels and site improvements, among others. Construction of both the Center and parking garage is expected to begin in late 2020 and take roughly 4.5 years to complete.
Cemetery land reclamation
Pre-construction activities are ongoing. The project includes removal of contaminated soil, constructing retaining walls, extensive ground improvement to include landscapes and related hard structures, and provides a new maintenance facility.
Army Corps’ Commitment
The New York District has a robust military construction mission that supports the U.S. Army and its personnel. Maintaining first-class facilities for West Point is part of that commitment, along with many other construction projects throughout the U.S. and abroad.
