Dr. Wen-Huei (Wen) Chang is the new Director of the Institute for Water Resources Center (WRC) in Alexandria, VA, having taken on this role June 3, 2024. The following interview reflects a conversation with the new director on his journey from scholar to director and his vision for the WRC.

(WASHINGTON) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosts delegates from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the World Bank as part of a study on nature-based solutions funded by the World Bank. During their eight-day visit with USACE, the delegation toured sites in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida with the visit culminating at USACE headquarters in Washington, D.C., which included a briefing on the Sustainable Rivers Program and a roundtable discussion of all the events. The multi-day exchange of best practices in nature-based solutions for large river systems will provide more economical, efficient, and environmentally-sound water resources management in the U.S. and Vietnam’s respective river basins. The engagement aligns with the U.S. Global Water Strategy and the Mekong-U.S. Partnership as well as reinforces the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, and environmental diplomacy. ALEXANDRIA, Va. (June 10, 2024) – The Institute for Water Resources (IWR), part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), has released a report through its Water Resources Center on improving the use of structured decision-making for water resource management. Titled "Analysis of Tradeoffs Approaches Applicable to USACE Civil Works Planning," the report outlines methods for comparing the benefits and effects of various planning alternatives to support selecting alternative plans in managing the nation’s water resources.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher A. Celiz was posthumously presented the Gold Order of the de Fleury Medal, the highest honor in the U.S. Army Engineer Regiment, during a ceremony today in Savannah, Georgia. Celiz, a Medal of Honor recipient and native of Summerville, South Carolina, was selected for the Gold de Fleury in recognition of service and sacrifice as a U.S. Army combat engineer and noncommissioned officer.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (April 18, 2024) - A white paper was released in February 2024 titled “Enhancing Risk-Informed Decision Making in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: Policy Review and Recommendations, through the IWR’s Water Resources Center. This paper takes a closer look at how risk-informed decision-making can improve risk related policies. The white paper looks at communication, risk tolerance, understanding uncertainty, and integrating risk-informed decision-making throughout the entire life cycle of the project. The insights obtained will also enhance the recently launched e-Risk Register application. This white paper makes 5 recommendations to take Risk-Informed Decision-Making to the next level.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (April 17, 2024) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is a participant in the United Nations' (UN) High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP). Established in 2007 at the request of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB), HELP comprises 21 international organizations to address water disaster preparedness and response. The group collaborates closely with the UN Secretariat for the Office for Disaster Reduction (UNDRR). The USACE representative to HELP is the USACE chief of engineers, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon.

In a ceremony held at the Hart Senate Office Building, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Director of Planning and Policy, Eric Bush, was presented with the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association’s (ASBPA) Corps of Engineers Coastal Summit Award.
