Sharing a mutual connection to WW I's Christmas Day Truce of 1914
LAKE KAWEAH, Calif. — Maj. Gen. Merdith "Bo" Temple, acting commanding general and acting chief of engineers (left), offers a personally inscribed book to Valerie McKay, Sacramento District park ranger, here on March 15. Temple met with McKay at Lake Kaweah’s visitors center after she responded to his holiday e-mail referencing the historic Christmas Day Truce of 1914. McKay’s late grandfather fought in World War I for the British and participated in the famous event, where British and German soldiers laid down their arms to sing and remember Christmas before resuming fighting.
