• Cochiti Lake's Santa Cruz Day-Use Area closed to swimming due to blue-green algae

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District, announced today (Aug. 30, 2019) that effective immediately the Santa Cruz day-use area at Cochiti Lake is closed to swimming due to the presence of toxic blue-green algae in Cochiti Lake. The Cochiti Swim Beach remains closed.
  • U.S Army Corps Awards Construction Contract for New VA Stockton Clinic

    VA Palo Alto Health Care System and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District awarded a $143.5 million construction contract on August 29 to S. J. Amoroso Construction Company of Redwood City, California, to build a new patient care facility near Stockton.
  • Weekly Missouri Basin flood response update – 8/29

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers emergency and water management officials held a call August 29 to communicate an update of current runoff conditions, system storage and a status of flooding response and recovery activities. Next week will mark the beginning of monthly calls. The first call will include a webinar in a format similar to the Monthly Update Webinars which are usually held from January until June or July and were an initiative launched in 2012. The most recent of these webinars was held March 7, 2019, and included a Spring Hydrologic Outlook from the National Weather Service, Missouri Basin River Forecast Center.
  • Long-serving program manager retires from TAD

    After a career that spanned more than 35 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Transatlantic Division employee Ronald J. Tomechko, retired from federal civil service during a Town Hall event that took place on Aug. 29, 2019, at TAD’s headquarters in Winchester, Virginia. The event was hosted by TAD Commander Col. Christopher Beck who said that throughout his three-plus decades working for the Corps of Engineers, Tomechko “touched more people, more programs, more dollars, and more careers than anyone can imagine.” Beck said if you look up “quiet professional” you would “find the definition of Ron.”
  • Corps prepares for Hurricane Dorian

    As Hurricane Dorian makes its way toward Florida, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District is preparing to respond as needed and providing information to the public, including boaters and campers, on operational adjustments that will take place at Herbert Hoover Dike, Corps water control structures, navigation locks, and recreation facilities.
  • 19-096 Lower Granite summer hours coming to an end; crossers may experience delays during the month of September

    LOWER SNAKE RIVER, Wash. – Lower Granite Lock and Dam, near Pomeroy, Wash., will be coming to the end of its summer hours this weekend. Beginning Monday, Sept. 2, the dam will return to a 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily schedule with the exception of being closed during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

    As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ commanding general issued a call to revolutionize its data strategy earlier this year, the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, was already well ahead of the curve.
  • Trotters seepage remediation project underway

    Memphis District Commander Col. Zachary Miller visited the Trotters Seepage Remediation Project on Aug. 26 to view work progress. The work site is located in Tunica County, Miss., near the community of Trotters. The project’s purpose is to reduce seepage under the Mississippi River levee to protected areas and prevent sand boil activity during periods of high water. The contractor, VuConn, LLC, is building a compacted earthen berm in an approximately 47-acre area in the bend of the levee. They are also installing six relief wells to relieve pressure in the aquifer during periods of high water. The existing drainage ditches will direct water to a pump station south of the project area where it can be transferred back into the river.
