    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announces it has continued to make progress in its preparation for the remediation operations at the Shallow Land Disposal Area in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.
  • Corps of Engineers leaders, FUSRAP staff meet with Cades Cove homeowners

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, met with Cades Cove homeowners yesterday to provide an update on future remediation activities in their neighborhood. District officials also met with area elected officials to update them as well. “The safety and well-being of the affected property owners is paramount in our remediation activities,” said Col. Andy Pannier, USACE St. Louis District commander. “We are currently working to develop documentation that outlines potential response actions to address materials at these properties and we are committed to coordinating closely with the property owners and surrounding community as we work through this process.”

    ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) St. Louis District, under its Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), has begun sampling activities in a subdivision located in Florissant, Missouri. This initiative includes portions of the right-of-way of Cades Cove Drive and on the common grounds adjacent to Coldwater Creek.
  • Iowa site works to award new remediation contract

    The Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) continues its efforts to complete remediation at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) near Middletown, Iowa. This site update includes cubic yards shipped to a license, out-of-state disposal facility as of June 30, 2023 as well as efforts to obtain a new remediation contract.

  • Design, Construction, and Testing of the PFAS Effluent Treatment System (PETS), a Mobile Ion Exchange–Based System for the Treatment of Per-, Poly-Fluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) Contaminated Water

    Abstract: Poly-,Per-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are versatile chemicals that were incorporated in a wide range of products. One of their most important use was in aqueous film-forming foams for fighting liquid fuel fires. PFAS compounds have recently been identified as potential environmental contaminants. In the United States there are hundreds of potential military sites with PFAS contamination.The ERDC designed and constructed a mobile treatment system to address small sites (250,000 gallons or less) and as a platform to field test new adsorptive media. The PFAS Effluent Treatment System (PETS) has cartridge filters to remove sediments and a granular activated carbon (GAC) media filter to remove organic compounds that might compete with PFAS in the ion exchange process, although it may also remove PFAS too. The last process is an ion exchange resin specifically designed to remove PFAS to a target level of 70 ng/L or less (equivalent to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Drinking Water Health Advisory). The system was tested at Hurlburt Field, a US Air Force facility in Florida and at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South in Millington, TN.
  • Application of Incremental Sampling Methodology for Subsurface Sampling

    ABSTRACT:  Historically, researchers studying contaminated sites have used grab sampling to collect soil samples. However, this methodology can introduce error in the analysis because it does not account for the wide variations of contaminant concentrations in soil. An alternative method is the Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM), which previous studies have shown more accurately captures the true concentration of contaminants over an area, even in heterogeneous soils. This report describes the methods and materials used with ISM to collect soil samples, specifically for the purpose of mapping subsurface contamination from site activities. The field data presented indicates that ISM is a promising methodology for collecting subsurface soil samples containing contaminants of concern, including metals and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), for analysis. Ultimately, this study found ISM to be useful for supplying information to assist in the decisions needed for remediation activities.
  • BUFFALO DISTRICT COMPLETES REMEDIAL ACTION AT FORMERLY UTILIZED SITES REMEDIAL ACTION PROGRAM VICINITY PROPERTY

    On July 7, 2020, members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District team performed radon flux sampling at the Tonawanda Landfill Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) Vicinity Property to verify that the record of decision cleanup goals were met. Validated data gathered from the 108 radon flux canisters that were placed over the excavation areas of the vicinity property indicate that the cleanup goals were indeed met.
  • District awards environmental remediation contract to support cleanup of Front Range Air Force bases

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Omaha District awarded an $8.5 million Optimized Remediation Contract in July that focuses on a large, joint environmental clean-up effort at six Air Force bases across four states in the Northwest also referred to as the Front Range group.
