Corps awards $7.6 million border barrier contract
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Pacific Border District awarded a $7.6 million contract modification April 15 to Fisher Sand & Gravel Co., Dickinson, North Dakota, for approximately 800 linear feet of border wall construction and associated infrastructure in Yuma, Arizona.

Corps’ Omaha District spotlights energy efficient, environmentally sustainable headquarters for 50th anniversary of Earth Day
Built in 1958, the original Zorinsky Building, home to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District’s headquarters, was erected before the modern world embraced the environmental movement. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, renovations to the 432,000 square-foot building managed by the Government Services Administration have been implemented based on the standards and criteria of the U.S. Green Council’s Sustainability Program to make the building more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Corps continues flows from Lake O, supports firefighting in Everglades National Park
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will continue flows from the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79) to the Caloosahatchee estuary at a 7-day average rate of 457 cubic feet per second (cfs). Flows to the St. Lucie estuary remain at zero cfs as measured at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam (S-80). Releases are made in a pulse pattern which begin on Saturday. In addition, our partners at the South Florida Water Management District have coordinated with the Corps as they mobilize pumps and modify water management operations to help control a wildfire in Everglades National Park.

Draft EA for flood-related repairs to several Salt Creek Dams in Nebraska available for public comment
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, is seeking comments on a draft environmental assessment for a proposal to repair several Salt Creek Dams in and around Lincoln, Nebraska. Comments on the draft EA will be accepted until May 23, 2020.

Houston Ship Channel Expansion Reaches Major Milestone
GALVESTON, Texas – Yesterday, Galveston District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) received a signed Chief of Engineers Report (Chief’s Report) for the proposed Houston Ship Channel Expansion Project. Signed April 23 by Lt. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, USACE Chief of Engineers and Commanding General, the report culminates a four-year, $10 million study conducted by USACE in partnership with Port Houston to identify needed channel improvements, determine economic value to the nation, and complete necessary environmental requirements. The signed report recommends adoption of the plan presented by Galveston District in order to support economic efficiency of commercial navigation throughout the Houston Ship Channel System.
