Fast-growing Resource Efficiency Manager Program expands to Army Reserve
The Army’s Resource Efficiency Manager Program grew 82 percent in fiscal year 2014 with the addition of 19 REMs, which includes 11 new REMs at Army Reserve locations.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deploys Team in Support of Operation United Assistance
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deployed a team with engineering and engineering-related expertise to Liberia in support of Operation United Assistance, which is part of the comprehensive U.S. Government Ebola effort in West Africa led by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Restoring a former Atlas Missile site in Nebraska
On Oct. 7, 2014, an Omaha District Environmental Remediation team led by Hector Santiago, project manager, won the biennial Secretary of the Army Environmental Award in Environmental Restoration-Installation for 2013. The honor, given by IMCOM subordinate command U.S. Army Environmental Command, recognizes and rewards “excellence in the development, management, and transferability of environmental programs that increase environmental quality, enhance the mission, and support Army sustainability.” Each award is for a two-year performance period and the 2013 award covers achievements from Oct. 1, 2011 through Sept. 30, 2013.

Corps Booth Helps Girl Scouts Learn About STEM
The District had a booth at the 2014 Girl Scouts STEM Camporee Sept. 13, 2014, where more than 700 Scouts learned more about endangered species, how and why dams are built, and Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) safety.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Army Corps of Engineers supports new “Every Kid in a Park” recreation initiative
President Obama, with the support of the Federal Interagency Council on Outdoor Recreation to include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today the start of a new initiative to give every child in the United States the chance to explore and learn about America’s great outdoors. The Every Kid in a Park initiative will provide all fourth grade students and their families with free admission for a full year to more than 2,000 federally-managed sites nationwide.
