USACE completes construction at Portugues Dam
"Entonces, felicidades en sus logros," (Congratulations on your accomplishments). That was the key message from Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), to those who attended a dedication ceremony Feb. 5 celebrating completion of Portugues Dam, a $386 million structure designed to reduce flooding impacts in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

District welcomes middle school’s First Lego® League
Jacksonville District continues to make strides in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, as employees hosted students from JEB Stuart Middle School’s First Lego® League (FLL) at the district’s headquarters office. The event provided a view of the STEM disciplines as they are used in Corps career fields.

Corps signs agreement with locals, promotes volunteer and educational programs
TIOGA, Pa. — Community leaders, volunteers, visitors and members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gathered Feb. 11 at the Ives Run Visitor Center for a ceremonial signing of the Friends of Tioga-Hammond & Cowanesque Lakes cooperative agreement. This agreement establishes a formal relationship between the Corps and community to provide volunteers, services, educational programs and family events to the local community.

Army Corps Battalion: Life Support for VA Hospital
Patients at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, New York were pleasantly surprised recently to see active duty soldiers walking in their hallways. "It's so nice to see when they walk through the facility how the patients react to them. They look at their shoulders and see the rank and they ask ‘How are you Sarge?’

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Army Corps of Engineers seeks public comments on proposal to renew and revise nationwide permits
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it is seeking comments on its proposal to renew and revise nationwide permits for work in wetlands and other waters that are regulated by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899.

President's Fiscal Year 2012 Budget for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works released
The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2012 (FY12) includes $4.631 billion in gross discretionary funding for the Civil Works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), offset in part by a proposal to cancel $57 million of prior year funding, of which $35 million was provided through an emergency supplemental appropriation.

Report published identifying climate change research needs for long-term water resources planning and management
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation have published a report, "Addressing Climate Change in Long-Term Water Resources Planning and Management: User Needs for Improving Tools and Information," that identifies the needs of local, state, and federal water management agencies for climate change information and tools to support long-term planning.

Updated draft National Wetland Plant List available for review and comment
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it is soliciting public comments on the updated draft National Wetland Plant List (NWPL) developed as part of an ongoing interagency effort to identify and assign wetland plant ratings (indicator status) to species found in the U.S and its territories.
