Corps of Engineers leads coalition effort to save coho salmon
In the winter of 2011, biologists funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers counted a record number of wild juvenile coho salmon in the downstream portions of the Russian River system in western Sonoma County. Adult coho also appear to be reproducing in some of their historical tributaries for the first time since large-scale monitoring of the species began in 2005.

Power teams rapidly deploy to help east coast communities
Recently, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers emergency response personnel deployed to various states in the eastern U.S. to help with response and recovery efforts after Hurricane Irene left a path of destruction from North Carolina to Vermont. This was the first time USACE deployed multiple power teams and their resources to multiple states simultaneously.

USACE leverages drought to perform lake maintenance
Water levels at Tulsa District lakes were the lowest in years as the result of an extreme drought. The drought had many negative impacts on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local communities, but USACE took advantage of the low water to perform routine necessary maintenance on facilities that are usually underwater.

Huntsville team supports flood victims
On Sept. 8, a tropical storm brought heavy flooding in the Susquehanna River Valley, and FEMA assigned a temporary housing mission to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The housing planning and response team (PRT) from Huntsville Center took the mission to support residents rendered homeless by the Susquehanna River flood.

2nd Engineer Battalion burns its colors
Every year, the Soldiers of the 2nd Engineer Battalion burn their unit colors. To military people, this is shocking. A unit’s colors, its flag, is part of the unit’s soul. During a change of command the colors pass from the previous commander to the new commander. Battle streamers record the unit’s history in combat. The colors lead the unit on parade.
