    Improving water quality: Corps biologist fights algae blooms at Salamonie

    LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- Harmful Algal Blooms have been plaguing the Salamonie Watershed in Northern Indiana since 2009, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District Water Quality Biologist Jade Young has been working for more than three years to combat the problem.

The 53rd chief of engineers discussed the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, with students in an Advanced Placement biology class and later gave a pep talk to cadets in the school’s Army JROTC unit. He was interviewed by students in a television and radio production class, who broadcast it via internal school channels. Bostick also sat down with AFN Stuttgart to talk about the USACE mission, warfighter support and ways in which communities benefit from Army STEM innovations.     STUTTGART, Germany -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commanding general made a pitch to spur more interest in science, technology, engineering and math among American students during a visit May 14 to Patch High School.

    SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas-- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, began work on a $14.5 million jetty repair project at the entrance to the Brownsville Ship Channel with scheduled completion in 2014.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. - What do you get when you combine 18 college students, 7 federal regulators, and a wetland? For students at Savannah State University, it was a chance to learn about the expertise needed to delineate and protect wetlands across the state of Georgia.

    USACE leaders, veterans participate in Ride 2 Recovery Memorial Challenge

    On Memorial Day, May 27, senior leaders from Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, rode the first leg of a Ride 2 Recovery (R2R) event known as the Memorial Challenge during which more than 200 injured veterans will complete a 350-mile bicycle ride from Washington, D.C., to Virginia Beach, Va.

    Corps of Engineers begins post-Sandy comprehensive study of North Atlantic coast

    BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- As directed by Congress with the passage of the Disaster Relief Appropriation Act of 2013, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scientists and engineers launched a collaborative study today to determine how best to reduce flood and storm damage risks for people and communities along the North Atlantic coast.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Although creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority by Congressional Act on May 18, 1933 relieved the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of most of its role in developing the economic potential of the Tennessee River and its tributaries, the Corps retained a development and operational role on the Cumberland River and its tributaries.

    ERDC researchers contribute to historic honor

    A pair of researchers with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center have been recognized for their significant contributions to the Army’s selection as a 2012 Top 100 Global Innovators Award. Bartley Durst and Toney Cummins with the ERDC Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory were named two of the top 20 inventors in the Army for 2009-2011.

Pier 2 has been inoperable for the past five years and is a key component for MOTCO, which represents nearly 25 percent of the nation's total ammunition shipping capability. The Department of the Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District have been developing three viable scenarios for Pier 2 and/or Pier 3 modernizations - all of which would allow MOTCO to meet its mission safely and efficiently. The district is gathering public input to determine the best approach to modernize the piers, and hopes to outline that plan in the final environmental impact statement expected fall 2014 with possible construction tentatively scheduled in 2016.     USACE to modernize military port's piers

    SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Since 1942, the Military Ocean Terminal Concord -- or MOTCO -- has been a vital ammunition distribution center in support of the deploying forces during the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf Wars. But this facility in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area has not been able to efficiently carry out its mission for a long time, especially with only one of its three piers being partially operable the last five years.
