  • Materials testing to start in June for Corps Isabella Lake Dam project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is set to begin testing the suitability of stone near Isabella Lake for use in the construction of the Isabella Lake Dam Safety Modification Project. The test results will be used to develop the design and specifications for production of stone and aggregates material that will be used in safety upgrades to Isabella Lake main and auxiliary dams.

  • NR-040: Nashville District provides info on how government shutdown is affecting operations

    The Nashville District is in the process of conducting an orderly shutdown because of a lack of appropriations. The district will reduce its manpower over time to essential personnel only. These essential personnel will continue to support critical Corps of Engineers missions such as dam safety, hydropower, and operation of the navigation locks on both the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers. The Corps is funded through multiple-year funding, which is enabling the Nashville District to conduct limited operations and construction through the course of the government shutdown. As the lapse in appropriations continues, we will have more employees furloughed over time, but will maintain our mission essential personnel to ensure the operation and protection of corps facilities and property.

  • Corps awards $6.8 million contract for New Hogan Dam improvements

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded a three-year, $6.8 million construction contract to upgrade tainter gates at New Hogan Dam, the Corps facility near Valley Springs.

  • South Pacific Division commander visits district projects, people

    Col. David Turner, the commander of the South Pacific Division, went on a whirlwind tour of several Los Angeles District projects during a visit to the area Aug. 19-23. Turner, who took command of the division in June, was joined by James Dalton, the Corps of Engineers’ chief of engineering and construction, and Brad Schwichtenberg, deputy chief of the division’s regional integration team.

  • District takes Dam Safety exercises to community partners

    The District’s Dam Safety and Readiness sections are following an aggressive schedule of internal drills, but are also traveling to the Rogue and Willamette basins and the Columbia Gorge this summer to hold project familiarization sessions and tabletop exercises with local and county emergency managers and responders.

  • Corps finds no evidence of damage at Isabella Lake Dam following nearby earthquake

    Inspections of Isabella Lake Dam have found no evidence of damage or increased likelihood of dam failure following a 4.3-magnitude earthquake that hit July 24 at 9:46 a.m. approximately 20 miles southeast of the dam.

  • Corps maintains higher water storage capacity at Success Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District announced June 10 it will maintain the operating restriction at Success Dam implemented in 2012. The restriction allows water storage up to 65,000 acre-feet or approximately 75 percent of the maximum capacity of the reservoir behind Success Dam. Ultimately, this could mean more water for local users during high-water months.

  • Corps’ dam safety mission highlighted on Dam Safety Awareness Day

    More than 2,200 people died in Johnstown, Pa., May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam failed nine miles upstream of the town. “On National Dam Safety Awareness Day, May 31, we are called to remember both the benefits of dams and the risks associated with potential dam incidents and failures,” said Col. Bill Leady, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District.

  • Recreation survey at Isabella Lake to begin Memorial Day weekend

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded a $98,182 contract May 16 to Gulf South Research Corporation of Baton Rouge, La., to conduct user surveys and collect visitor information at recreation sites around Isabella Lake beginning Memorial Day weekend and lasting throughout the summer recreation season.
