  • Living with dams: deluge an ever-present possibility

    If Cougar were to completely fail, that water would rush 60 miles down the McKenzie River, washing away everything in its path, until it reached the Eugene and Springfield area. The deluge could make Eugene and Springfield look like Corvallis, Oregon City and Portland after the Flood of 1996; although no dams failed during that event. That image, and the desire to do everything possible to keep it from becoming reality, was the backdrop for a recent inspection at Cougar Dam, May 24.

  • Corps continues field studies at Willamette Valley dams

    A drill crew will soon be on site at Cougar Dam, east of Eugene, Oregon, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continues field investigation at some dams in the Willamette Valley. The crews will also install instrumentation on the crest of Cougar Dam. The drilling and installation will require the eastbound lane across the dam to be closed intermittently. These closures will be from May 30 to June 13 between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., reducing traffic to one lane.

(May 4, 2017) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District and Thalle Construction Company, construction contractor, will discuss upcoming blasting operations near Center Hill Dam during a public meeting 5:30 p.m. May 9 at the Resource Manager’s Shop Conference Room located just below the dam at 158 Resource Lane in Lancaster, Tenn.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has finalized a key report that authorizes additional rehabilitation work on the Herbert Hoover Dike that surrounds Lake Okeechobee in south Florida. The Corps’ Jacksonville District received notification Tuesday (Aug. 30) that the dam safety modification report for the dike has been approved, marking the culmination of a four-year effort to conduct a risk assessment of the 143-mile earthen structure and develop alternatives for its rehabilitation.
