Ongoing R&D is discovering new ways to put dredged sediment to use
Dredging is a central part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) largest mission – to maintain clear, safe and navigable waterways. Without periodic dredging, many harbors and ports would be impassable, and so more than 400 ports and 25,000 miles of navigation channels are dredged throughout the U.S. each year.

Army Announces Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works Investments for Supply Chain Resilience and Flood Mitigation Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
WASHINGTON – Today, the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works announced additional U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studies, projects, and programs funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These actions will invest almost $800 million to address urgent issues facing Americans, including supply chain resilience, flood mitigation, and coastal storm damage protection.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

National Levee Safety Program hosts virtual workshops to capture stakeholder insights
In January and early February 2022, working in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began hosting a series of virtual public workshops to gather stakeholder input on a national approach for developing a new integrated framework for managing reliable levee systems and improving community resiliency in areas behind all levees throughout the Nation. This input will be used to help shape the National Levee Safety Program.
