    Critical drainage channels to be maintained

    Throughout its history, the Lower Mississippi River Flood Plain has been besieged by floodwaters; that’s why flood risk management is one of the Memphis District's major mission areas. We serve as the first line of defense for the entire lower Valley. Working to execute this mission and serving as that first line of defense, a Memphis District Project Delivery Team awarded three major contracts to perform maintenance on drainage channels 1 and 251, which are located in the Little River Drainage District in Southeast Missouri. The contracts are for lower Ditch 251, upper Ditch 251, and upper Ditch 1 and authorize contractors to go in and return a total of 89 miles worth of drainage channels to their authorized level of flood protection.
  • ENFIRE Refresher Course Produces Renewed Contingency Preparedness

    The 11th Engineers have concluded a refresher course held during the week of Aug. 3 designed to leverage the use of ENFIRE, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) rapid data collecting tool kit. Instruction set, reconnaissance, and surveying (commonly known as ENFIRE) allows Far East District (FED) Soldiers and civilians to conduct reconnaissance with modernized collection and dissemination technology from a safe distance, making it possible to deliver data with a greater level of precision than ever before.

    Brady Beckman was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal for exhibiting superior leadership of the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet during successive record O&M years of Workload and the COVID-19 pandemic. His steady leadership has ensured the fleet continues to execute their critical mission in a safe manner. He diligently managed the execution of the FY19 Major Maintenance and Repair Schedule despite unseasonably high water during most of the repair season. He recommended and carried out needed changes to the schedule to maximize effectiveness of crews and ensured project budgets were not exceeded.
  • Far East District participates in job fair

    The Far East District supported Camp Humphreys job fair at The Morning Calm Center Aug. 5. The district employs more than 450 individuals in 120 job titles and is the largest public engineering design and construction management agency in the world.

    In a time when the Scientific American newsletter reports that 45% of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) leave their jobs because of feeling underpaid and unrepresented, Carol A. Spratley, Project Manager for the Korea Program Relocation Office defies this statistic by virtue of her 41 years as an employee of the U S. Army Corps of Engineers. Twenty-one of those years were spent in her most recent of two tours to South Korea in service to the Far East District.

    ASHDOWN, Ark. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District will begin lowering Millwood Lake Thursday, Aug. 19 to inspect shoreline erosion, provide bank stabilization, and make minor repairs to the boat ramp at Beards Bluff.
  • Corps to open more parks on Norfork and Bull Shoals Lakes

    MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mountain Home Project Office will open more parks on Friday, Aug. 21 around Norfork and Bull Shoals lakes. Some parks never opened this summer and remained closed because of high water and operating procedures related to COVID-19.

  • David D. Terry Lock and Dam to close for maintenance

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is scheduling a lock closure at David D. Terry Lock & Dam on the Arkansas River from 6 a.m. Aug. 19 until 6 p.m. Aug. 29, so workers can perform required tests on critical components of the lock.
  • Contract awarded for Carrollton Floodwall Project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, recently awarded a contract for the Mississippi River Carrollton Floodwall project in New Orleans. The $8.9M construction contract was awarded to APC Construction, LLC of Algiers, La. Construction is expected to begin in late September and be completed by March 2022.
