Two ERDC researchers earn Black Engineer of the Year awards
At the office, LaKenya Walker spends her time using high-performance computing to help the military better understand its weapon systems. Cameron Thomas works just a few buildings away as an expert in explosive weapons effects. Though their jobs are a bit different, the two U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center employees now have something very special in common—they are both winners of the 2020 Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) for Modern Day Technology Leaders.

Two from TAD receive Civilian Service Achievement Medal
JoAnn Evans, a former Transatlantic Division employee who was recently inducted into the organization’s Gallery of Distinguished Civilians, and Susan Fenton, a current TAD employee, both were awarded the Civilian Service Achievement Medal during a ceremony here Feb. 20.

Fishtrap Lake Cleanup Continues
Recent flood events have left Fishtrap Lake in Shelbiana, Ky., with a large amount of drift and debris to remove. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Pike County have worked together to remove that material, and so far more than 2,000 cubic yards of drift and more than 200 cubic yards of trash has been removed.

Federal agencies release Columbia River System Operations draft environmental impact statement and preferred alternative
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation and Bonneville Power Administration today released the Columbia River System Operations draft environmental impact statement for a 45-day public review and comment period from February 28 - April 13, 2020. The draft includes the Preferred Alternative for the operations, maintenance and configuration of the 14 federal dam and reservoir projects that comprise the Columbia River System.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Vicksburg District provides updated forecast for region - Feb. 25
VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Arkansas City, Arkansas, at 39.5 feet Feb. 28; Greenville, Mississippi, at 51.3 feet Feb. 28; Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 47.8 feet Feb. 29; and Natchez, Mississippi, at 55 feet March 1. These projections are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and will changed based on future rainfall.

Vicksburg District announces updates to online inundation mapping viewer
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announced Feb. 24 that its online viewer for inundation mapping has been updated to include new forecast information and additional areas in the district’s jurisdiction.

Work Plan increases Vicksburg District funding for fiscal year 2020
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District has announced that its Work Plan for the 2020 fiscal year includes $102 million in funding for its civil works program, the largest amount of funding since the 2013 fiscal year. The Work Plan will fund projects, programs and activities that received funding in the three previous fiscal years and will prioritize ongoing work that can reach significant milestones or produce significant outputs during the 2020 fiscal year.
