    Army Corps makes great strides during Two Years of Coastal Restoration following Sandy

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made great strides and progress on its projects that were authorized and funded following Hurricane Sandy. The planning, projects and programs were vital, and several milestones were accomplished by several disciplined group of individuals and teams that used their expertise to successfully accomplish this critical mission.

    FORT BENNING, Ga. – Hundreds gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony held Nov. 7 in the atrium of the newly-constructed Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia.
  • SHAPE community celebrates opening of US schools

    MONS, Belgium – Top military and civilian leaders from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, the Department of Defense Education Activity and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially dedicated the U.S. sections Monday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at SHAPE International School. The new Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe elementary and middle schools – to be followed by an American high school this coming winter – are the first to open as part of a multinational-funded venture to build a state-of-the-art campus on this NATO base by the fall of 2019.
  • Still waters run deep on Staten Island

    Residents of Grimsby Street in Midland Beach, Staten Island, New York noticed a large puddle of water in their neighborhood. Days went by – there was the puddle, a few months go by – there still was the puddle. The body of water was there so long residents began counting the days – 280! A resident said that it got to the point that the neighborhood named it Grimsby Lake.

    The Far East District Kunsan resident office, along with the 8th Civil Engineer Squadron and Yi Bon Construction Company LTD., completed a major repair on the Kunsan Air Base runway and taxiways during September and October of 2014.

  • Osan Air Base opens new senior noncommissioned officer dorm

    A new senior noncommissioned officer dormitory opened on Osan Air Base, in the Republic of Korea (ROK), Nov. 5. The project was funded by the ROK government as part of a ROK funded construction in-kind project. The Ministry of National Defense - Defense Installations Agency (MND-DIA) was responsible for executing and managing the construction contract. The US Army Corps of Engineers Far East District worked with MND-DIA to provide construction quality assurance.
  • Aspiring engineer learns valuable lessons during STEM shadow day

    Seoul American High School senior Warren Nieto visited the Far East District compound Nov. 5 to experience what life as an engineer is really like. “It’s great to get out of the classroom and have this hands-on experience,” said Nieto. “Watching what people do on a daily basis and trying it out for yourself is much better than reading about it in a textbook where you don’t get a full picture about how it’s really done.”
  • Futures in engineering begin in middle school

    Take 35 enthusiastic middle school students, mix in a natural resource specialist, a biologist, an engineer and the backdrop of the Missouri River, with a barge and a dredger, and you get an education for our students, one STEM at a time.
