    WINCHESTER, Va. - Students from local high schools make plans to construct a water tower with toothpicks and gumdrops during the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District’s Day with an Engineer March 19 held at Lord Fairfax Community College’s Middletown campus.

    Students experience a Day with an Engineer

    WINCHESTER, Va. – Nearly 100 students from eight area high schools took a day away from their usual studies to learn about engineering career fields March 21 at Lord Fairfax Community College’s Middletown Campus. During the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District’s annual Day with an Engineer, high school students interacted with engineers to explore the different disciplines of the engineering field.

The river is formed about 22 miles west of Birmingham. Holt Lake, formed by the Holt Lock and Dam, Oliver Lake, formed by the Oliver Lock and Dam, and another reservoir encompass the entire course of the river for its upper 60 miles. It stretches southeast into central Tuscaloosa County and Tuscaloosa, the largest city on the river.

    For the past few months, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District lock workers on the Allegheny River have been fighting the elements to keep the locks operational as the region endured severe freezing temperatures.
  • Sarah Wise, Corps regulatory specialist, accepts the district’s award of appreciation from Megagenesis director, Dr. Zke Zimmerman, presented to recognize the district’s consistent support at the annual event. Corps volunteers spent the day speaking with Savannah area students about internships and careers with the Corps at the event held Feb. 28 at Sol C. Johnson High School in Savannah. The event aims to promote a college-going culture by providing college and career information to students and parents, according to the website

    Outreach a ‘Wise’ pursuit to securing Corps’ future

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Millions of students are plagued by the age-old question, “What do I want to do for a living?” but the Corps helps to rectify this enigma by offering industry exposure to students at statewide outreach events.
