The commander of the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, obtained a firsthand look Jan. 16 at the progress of chemical warfare materiel remediation on a portion of Redstone Arsenal.

A few years ago, the community of Flint, Michigan struggled with lead contamination in its fresh water supply and more recently, residents of Newark, New Jersey experienced the same. What doesn’t always make the headlines are the good things that are occurring concerning the public’s drinking water.

Corps awards Florida business $23 million contract, helps protect Virginia space-flight facilities
The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $23.7 million contract to Miami-based business Continental Heavy Civil Corp. for beach renourishment at the NASA Wallops Island Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Mound City South Culvert Replacement gets final OK
Employees from our Caruthersville, Missouri Area Office, the Memphis District office and contractor representatives, recently completed the final inspection of the Mound City South Culvert Replacement Project. The project site is in the confluence area of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers in Mound City, Illinois.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Navigable Waters Protection Rule published today and becomes effective June 22, 2020. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Army are publishing a final rule defining the scope of waters federally regulated under the Clean Water Act. The Navigable Waters Protection Rule is the second step in a comprehensive, two-step process intended to review and revise the definition of “waters of the United States” consistent with the Executive Order signed on February 28, 2017, “Restoring the Rule of Law, Federalism, and Economic Growth by Reviewing the `Waters of the United States' Rule.” Once effective, it replaces the rule published on October 22, 2019. This rule becomes effective on June 22, 2020. Ashuelot River white water events on April 25 in Surry cancelled by paddling clubs due to COVID-19 concerns
All Ashuelot River paddling events that were scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2020, in Surry, New Hampshire, have been cancelled by the paddling club requestors due to concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, Surry Mountain Dam in Surry, New Hampshire, will not be providing controlled releases of water that weekend, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District officials.
