  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin dredging at Holland Harbor

    The U.S. Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will start dredging the entrance to Holland Harbor as early as Thursday, April 24 to remove shoaling across the federal channel.  Surveys indicate a shoal formed in the winter months across the entrance to the harbor that could potentially impact commercial dredging if not addressed. 

  • Over 300 attend LRD Industry Day

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) hosted Industry Day on Wednesday, December 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST at the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over 300 members from different industry sectors attended as they learned about USACE LRD’s regional mission, upcoming opportunities, and network with USACE employees across seven regional districts.

  • USACE Rock Island District awards first construction contract for Brandon Road Interbasin Project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, awarded the first construction contract for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project on November 27. The $15.5 million contract was awarded to Miami Marine Services for site preparation and riverbed rock removal for the engineered channel. Miami Marine will partner with Michels Construction, Inc. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for completion of this contract.

    During the week of June 2, 2024, Public Affairs Specialist from across the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) gathered in the picturesque terrain that surrounds the Huntington District in West Virginia for the second annual Visual Storytelling Workshop.

  • Detroit District accepting entries for annual photo contest

    DETROIT – The Detroit District invites the public to enter its 9th annual photo contest highlighting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites across the Great Lakes. The top 12 photographs highlighting Detroit District projects on the Great Lakes such as the Soo Locks, Duluth Ship Canal, piers, breakwaters or federal harbors and channels will earn a spot in the 2025 downloadable calendar. The entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. July 31, with winners determined by public voting on social media. The Soo Locks Visitors Center Association will award the top three photographers a plaque featuring their winning photo. “The Detroit District is proud to continue this annual tradition,” said District Commander Lt. Col. Wallace Bandeff. “The photo contest captures the beauty of the Great Lakes and allows us to see projects that we've designed, built and now, maintain from a whole new perspective.”

  • LRD teammate earns prestigious award

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division is pleased to honor Charles Sawyer, Ph.D., for his remarkable achievement in receiving the American Society of Civil Engineers Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Charlevoix channel dredging scheduled to conclude by May 15

    About 13,000 cubic yards of material is scheduled to be removed from the Charlevoix Harbor channel before May 15, as part of a maintenance dredging contract under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District.  Great Lakes Dock and Materials, LLC., located in Muskegon, will perform the work for the Corps of Engineers for approximately $480,000 and place the dredged materials in open water in Lake Michigan. The state-approved open water is located about a mile and a half northwest of the harbor entrance. 

  • Corps of Engineers Start Outer Harbor Dredging in Holland, Michigan

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, will begin dredging the outer harbor in Holland, Michigan, this weekend to remove about 31,000 cubic yards of sediment from the federal navigation channel. The King Co., based in Holland, Michigan was awarded a $901,885 contract to hydraulically dredge Holland and Grand Haven this spring. The expected completion for both harbors is May 31.

  • High winds, storms, wave action increase hazards

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, urges caution around Great Lakes harbor piers and breakwaters, particularly during high wind and wave events. Accidents can occur near harbor structures during turbulent weather late in the year. The lakeshore attracts residents and visitors who may not be aware of the powerful impacts strong winds and storms can bring to shorelines and harbor structures. “Although breakwater structures are built for navigation, they are often used for recreation,” said Chief of Operations and Maintenance Branch, Cindy Jarema. “Walking along breakwater structures can be hazardous – surfaces may be slippery and uneven, and wave action increases the risk of injury or falling into the water.”
