  • Permitting takes center stage in September for the World Equestrian Games

    The World Equestrian Games (WEG) which are administered by the Federation Equestre International (FEI), the worldwide governing body of equestrian sport, is the major international championship event for the eight core equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage, and para-equestrian dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining. The Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) at Tryon Resort in Tryon, North Carolina will host FEI WEG from September 11-23, 2018. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Wilmington District staff in the Asheville Regulatory Field Office have worked diligently with TIEC and its consultants over the last five years to permit the site in anticipation of this world-class event.

  • First DOD mitigation banking instrument for Maryland unveiled

    The U.S. Air Force at Joint Base Andrews, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland Department of the Environment, GreenTrust Alliance and GreenVest LLC announced the completion of the first Umbrella Mitigation Banking Instrument for the Department of Defense in Maryland during an event held at The Courses at Andrews, Sept. 6, 2018. The first site to be restored under the UMBI is Mattawoman Creek in Pomfret, which is in Charles County. The entire project yields nearly 38 wetland credits and almost 1,600 stream credits to provide potential mitigation for planned construction efforts on JBA, such as runway construction or expansion.

    A program to be signed by the Corps of Engineers on May 24 will be the first of its kind in the country and will once again allow impacts to healthy river bottom on the Elizabeth River to go forward while developers offset the impacts by cleaning up some of the contaminated “goo” elsewhere on the river.

  • Corps of Engineers completes permit decision for Kansas River Commercial Dredging

    KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District has completed the Record of Decision for proposed commercial dredging permits on the Kansas River. Five applicants have received proposed permits to extract sand and gravel from the river by hydraulic dredging. The Corps regulates the proposed dredging under the authority of Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act.
