  • Group picnic shelters reopen at Thurmond and Hartwell lakes

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Today the US Army Corps of Engineers began accepting new shelter reservations at Thurmond Lake near Augusta, Georgia, and at Hartwell Lake near Hartwell, Georgia, and Anderson, South Carolina. Group shelters are larger, covered picnic areas often used by groups and extended families. The Corps began taking reservations at:

    Evergreen trees aren’t typically considered aquatic vegetation, but if they’re used as Christmas trees in the Savannah River Basin, chances are they’ll continue “bearing fruit” under water. Rather than have old Christmas trees go to the landfill, rangers with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs at Hartwell and J. Strom Thurmond lakes collect the trees in December and January each year to make fish habitats in the reservoirs.
  • Corps’ Hartwell Lake Office accepts Christmas trees for recycling

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Project Office will again accept natural Christmas trees (no artificial trees) for recycling Dec. 26 through Jan. 26, 2020. All ornaments and tinsel must be removed before dropping the trees off.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. –The three reservoirs on the Savannah River operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers declared the first drought level Tuesday in response to the pool elevation at J. Strom Thurmond Lake dipping below 326.0 feet above mean sea level (ft-msl). Entering Trigger Level 1 activates the Corps’ drought management plan which conserves water in the reservoirs by reducing the outflows from the Thurmond Dam.
