    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Deputy Engineer David Van Dorpe joined Rep. Julia Brownley and local officials here Oct. 14 to celebrate the start of maintenance dredging at Channel Islands Harbor that will replenish sand at nearby Silver Strand and Hueneme beaches.

    Nearly two dozen children of Los Angeles District employees participated in the 21st Annual Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® program held at the district offices here April 24. The children, ranging in ages from 5 to 18 years old, took part in a variety of activities designed to expand opportunities and transform lives.

  • Vandenberg Education Center officially opens

    Officials ceremonially cut the ribbon officially opening the Vandenberg Air Force Base education center Feb. 27. The $14.2 million building replaces a 60-year-old facility and includes 20 classrooms, a computer lab, a testing center, and a 75-seat auditorium.

  • Corps deputy updates SAME on Civil Works transformation

    Maj. Gen. John Peabody addressed members of the Society of American Military Engineers at their 28th annual joint breakfast meeting Jan. 17 in Montebello, Calif. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' deputy commanding general for Civil and Emergency Operations said the country needs to work on the four "R's;" roads, railways, runways and rivers. Repairing aging infrastructure, he said, is an investment in the future.

  • EPA chief visits LA River

    Newly appointed EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy visited Los Angeles Nov. 21 to see first hand plans for the LA River's restoration. The EPA chief said she was pleased to view the work that's been done to connect the community to the natural world.

  • Corps to resume Sepulveda vegetation management operations

    During a nearly three-hour nature walk in the Sepulveda Dam Basin Feb. 12, Los Angeles District Commander Col. Mark Toy told representatives of local environmental groups that his operations and maintenance crews would soon resume the vegetation management work that began in December 2012.

  • Vandenberg breaks ground for education

    Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and 30th Space Wing broke ground Aug. 15 for a new education center here. The $14.2 million building will replace a 60-year-old facility that is used by more than 3,000 Airmen and their families.

  • Tujunga Wash now open to public

    Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and Los Angeles County cut the ribbon opening the Tujunga Wash Ecosystem Restoration Project in Valley Glen, Calif., to the public Aug. 15.
