  • Division’s First OCA Held at Cochiti Dam

    The first Operation Condition Assessment (OCA) in the South Pacific Division (SPD) took place the week of Oct. 8 at the Corps’ Cochiti Dam project, located about 50 miles north of Albuquerque.

  • Cochiti Dam Selected for Maintenance Management Review

    Jacobs Engineering, an independent contractor, was hired in 2011 to complete an assessment of the Corps’ Facility Equipment Maintenance (FEM) National Utilization Plan. According to best practices cited by Jacobs, an organization should be spending 4.8 percent of its budget on maintenance. Right now, the Corps spends about 0.2 percent. As a result of the assessment, Michael Ensch, chief of operations, Directorate of Civil Works, Headquarters, issued a national memorandum concerning the development of a maintenance management strategy. The memorandum detailed the creation of eight pilot studies, one for each of the Corps’ eight divisions, to be completed by November 2012.

  • Corps’ Contractor Receives Rich G. Levad Award

    Duane Nelson, a Corps’ contractor at John Martin Dam and Reservoir, received the Rich G. Levad Award Aug. 25 from members of the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) near Barr Lake, Colo.

  • Cochiti Lake Hosts Second Annual Triathlon

    The 2012 Cochiti Triathlon was held at Cochiti Lake July 29. It was organized by Chasing 3 Race Productions and was an official triathlon, sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the national governing body for many types of sports and racing events and a federation member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. All participants in this triathlon were members of the USA Triathlon or needed a one-day pass in order to compete.

  • Tiny Beetle Being Used to Control Pesky Plant

    On May 30, employees from the District’s environmental section participated in the Tamarisk Leaf Beetle Monitoring Workshop at a field training location in Bernalillo, N.M. The hands-on workshop, attended by approximately 30 people from the Corps and other governmental and state agencies, was conducted by the Tamarisk Coali-tion, a non-profit alliance out of Colorado whose mission is to restore riparian lands.

  • AFRL’s Space Vehicles Directorate to Get Three Labs

    District employees participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) new Space Sensors and Infrared Radiation Effects Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base June 7.

  • District’s Deputy Wows Kindergarten Class

    On May 19, Lt. Col. Richard Collins, Albuquerque District Deputy Commander, was invited to the school for a presentation to his son William’s kindergarten class.

  • Technicians Undergo Crane and Rigging Certification

    Eighteen technicians from the District’s managed lakes and reservoirs attended Class II Crane and Hoist Operator Certification training held at Cochiti Lake April 25 and 26.

  • Corps Makes Contribution to Feature Film Making

    New Mexico has become a hotbed for the television and movie industry within the last few years. The Albuquerque District often “plays a role” during the production of these projects, as representatives from production companies contact us for guidance and film permits.

  • Log Boom Necessary to Help Sequester Debris at Cochiti Lake

    The District has generated outreach materials and has updated its website to remind boaters and kayakers visiting Cochiti Lake that a log boom is in place.
