    Officials have finalized the Master Plan revision for Harry S. Truman Lake and the report is now available to the public. A Master Plan is the guidance document that describes how the resources of the lake will be managed in the future and provides the vision for how the lake should look in the future. The Master Plan does not address the details of operational plans such as specific recreational features, but it does set the stage for the classification of the land and its future use.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, in collaboration with Denver-area flood risk management partners, will host a community event with displays, gadgets, gear, scientists, engineers and park rangers to share information and build awareness of the role of Cherry Creek Dam in reducing flooding in the Denver area. Specialists in emergency preparedness and on the history and health of the Cherry Creek watershed also will help visitors explore their role in reducing floods.
  • Experimental and Numerical Analyses of Soil Electrical Resistivity under Subfreezing Conditions

    Abstract: The engineering behavior of frozen soils is critical to the serviceability of civil infrastructure in cold regions. Among various geophysical techniques, electrical resistivity imaging is a promising technique that is cost effective and provides spatially continuous subsurface information. In this study, under freeze–thaw conditions, we carry out lab–scale 1D electrical resistivity measurements on frost–susceptible soils with varying water content and bulk density properties. We use a portable electrical resistivity meter for temporal electrical resistivity measurements and thermocouples for temperature monitoring. Dynamic temperature-dependent soil properties, most notably unfrozen water content, exert significant influences on the observed electrical resistivity. Below 0 ◦C, soil resistivity increases with the decreasing temperature. We also observe a hysteresis effect on the evolution of electrical resistivity during the freeze–thaw cycle, which effect we characterize with a sigmoidal model. At the same temperature, electrical resistivity during freezing is consistently lower than that during thawing. We have implemented this sigmoidal model into a COMSOL finite element model at both laboratory and field scales which enables the simulation of soil electrical resistivity response under both short–term and long–term sub–freezing conditions. Atmospheric temperature variations induce soil temperature change, and thereby phase transition and electrical resistivity change, with the rate of change being a function of the depth of investigation and soil properties include initial water content and initial temperature. This study advances the fundamental understanding of the electrical behaviors of frozen soils and enhance the application of electrical geophysical investigations in cold regions.

  • ERDC hosts over 100 local students during annual Earth Day celebration

    More than 100 students from the Academy of Innovation, Porter’s Chapel, and St. Aloysious High School attended ERDC’s annual Earth Day Celebration Monday, April 8, in the ERDC Headquarters Building Auditorium. Engineers from several of ERDC’s laboratories set up interactive displays in the Atrium and spread information to the local students about how they can help keep the Earth healthy while also introducing them to the work done at the agency.
  • Army Holds First-of-its-Kind Career Fair in Arlington

    The traditional sights and sounds of Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers, were replaced with something brand new on Saturday, April 13. Instead of fans wearing jerseys cheering on the hometown team, potential candidates from throughout the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex carrying resumes entered the upper concourse of the stadium. They were looking for possible careers with more than 40 Army organizations including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Southwestern Division. The division had representatives on hand from Fort Worth, Galveston, Little Rock, and Tulsa Districts.
