    USACE awards contract to Virginia company to construct jetty at Tangier

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded a contract for more than $2.9 million to Gloucester-based Coastal Design & Construction Inc. to construct an approximately 685-foot-long stone jetty at the entrance of the Tangier Island Federal Navigation Channel, located on the western side of the island.

The island, located in the Chesapeake Bay just below the Maryland and Virginia border, is sinking and eroding away -- a dilemma that's expedited by churning storm waters.
