A Captain's role in an ACF build-out
Editors Note: April 6, 2020 was the day the Memphis District awarded the contract to build an Alternate Care Facility (ACF) in Memphis, Tennessee. The article below was written by Cpt. Alex Burruss, who at that time deployed to the Memphis District to work as an Operations Officer and assist with ACF projects and operations. This is his account of what happened during his few months working here. At the onset of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. USACE collaborated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to develop a plan for the rapid expansion of COVID-19 treatment spaces. USACE assigned each of its districts an area of responsibility, and the districts integrated into the local and state response agencies within their areas of responsibility. As local civil authorities conducted analysis and projected bed space requirements, USACE developed facility modification options for accommodating additional beds. Districts completed site assessments and provided project management support for converting existing buildings into alternate care facilities (ACFs). In April 2020, three weeks after the President declared a national emergency, the U.S. Army Engineer School (USAES), Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, deployed more than 30 Soldiers in support of the USACE response effort; Cpt. Alex W. Burruss was deployed to the Memphis District, USACE Mississippi Valley Division, Tennessee, for more than 60 days.

Corps will dig dry conditions with finished Kentucky Lock cofferdam
GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (March 24, 2021) – The cofferdam at the Kentucky Lock Addition Project is finished, a milestone that paves the way for downstream excavation work to prepare the site for construction of the remaining portion of the new lock chamber.

Project Makeover: Tractor Shop Breakroom
The Memphis District's skilled tradesmen are at it again, demoing and remodeling one building at a time until they've covered every structure in need of a makeover at Ensley Engineer Yard. Recently, a team of mechanics, electricians, carpenters, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and revetment workers all got together to completely renovate the Tractor Shop’s breakroom, literally from the ground up.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Corps awards contract for Sunny Isles Beach renourishment
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District awarded a contract on Jan 26 to Eastman Aggregate Enterprises, LLC of Lake Worth, Florida, for $14,040,069.05, for the Sunny Isles Beach shoreline renourishment project, part of the Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project.

FishPass project to begin construction
DETROIT – A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor is set to commence construction on the FishPass Project in Traverse City, Michigan the week of January 18. The contractor will begin by installing fencing, removing trees and preparing the site. “This milestone represents years of hard work from many dedicated partners,” said Marty Colburn, City Manager of Traverse City. “We ask the community to be patient with our construction partners as this exciting project advances. Soon, there will be dedicated viewing sites set up for the public to watch FishPass take shape.”

VERELL ATTENDS MARINE WING LIAISON KADENA RIBBON CUTTING
Colonel Thomas J. Verell Jr., U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Japan District commander, joined Brig. Gen. William J. Bowers, Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations Pacific, Brig. Gen. Christopher A. McPhillips, Commanding General of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Brig. Gen. Joel L. Carey, Commander of the 18th Wing, and Lt. Gen. H. Stacy Clardy, the commanding general for III Marine Expeditionary Force, during a ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 24 introducing the newly-minted facilities and hangers that are now part of the Marine Wing Liaison Kadena. Also attending the ceremony were construction partners from Prime Projects International, and Tokyu Construction.
