    RICHLAND, Wash. – In a major milestone, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Walla Walla District, in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the Yakama Nation, the Washington Department of Ecology, and the Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group has awarded a $1.2 million construction contract to PIPKIN INC. for the Bateman Island Causeway removal project.

    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Walla Walla District, has issued a five-year construction license to the Benton Conservation District (BCD) for the Amon Creek Habitat Restoration Project, a $1.2 million initiative aimed at improving fish habitat and migration conditions at the Yakima Delta Habitat Management Unit near McNary Lock and Dam.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, in partnership with the Friends of the Los Angeles River, will host a National Public Lands Day clean-up event Sept. 28 at the Sepulveda Basin.

  • Coalshaft South Temporary Closure

    The Coalshaft South parking lot and boat ramp at Lake Shelbyville will be closed starting the evening of Monday, September 2, 2024, through approximately 5p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2024, for a fish habitat placement project. The closures apply to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. These closures are necessary to provide safety for workers and members of the public while work is being conducted.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers removes WWII era gates hidden in St. Marys River

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, removed a spare set of miter gates, constructed for the Davis and Sabin Locks, from the St. Marys River this summer. The miter gates were hidden in the river for over 80 years and weighed about 350,000 pounds each. The gates were strategically stored downriver of the Soo Locks facility and out of the federal navigation channel in the 1940s during World War II. The purpose of storing the gates downriver was to have a spare set of replacement gates for either lock if the installed gates were damaged. “The Davis and Sabin locks were built in 1914 and 1919 and at the time were the largest locks in the world,” said Chief Park Ranger Michelle Briggs.

  • Real Estate Team Building 'Beautifies the Bucket' for beach cleanup

    Because of its location along the Gulf of Mexico, Texas receives 10 times more trash on its beaches than most other Gulf states. The Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees is responsible for keeping this litter off the local beaches. This mission requires a lot of effort, and a lot of waste containers, 4,000 to be exact. To help spruce up the trash receptacles, the Park Board sponsors a “Beautify the Bucket” contest, where community members can decorate barrels with their own art creations. This year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Galveston District (SWG), Real Estate Division wanted to join the beach beautification effort. “We decided to do it as a (in-house) real estate competition, as well as entering it there,” said Britney M. Nealon, SWG realty specialist. The Real Estate Division was split into four teams; the Jellyfish, Work Smart Not Hard, Team Cutthroat and Art and the Perception of Real(i)ty.
