    The Friends of Raystown Lake and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are calling on volunteers to participate in a shoreline cleanup at Raystown Lake during the annual Lake Cleanup Day, Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tatman Run Recreation Area (rain or shine).

    A heavily bundled up man looks out over the murky waters of the Trinity River. A thick overcast is muting the sunrise sky to a washed out gray. His bright orange jacket stands out like highlighter marks on dull white paper. He waits for the thumbs up from his comrades on the airboat below. Within seconds, the mechanical lock gates create a stir in the still water. Salt and fresh water collide, waking up wildlife along the Wallisville Lake Project. Egrets and pelicans—the proverbial early birds—are getting their fill.

  • Employee Spotlight: Geographic Information Systems Specialist Lindsay Barrios

    This month, we’re featuring Geographic Information Systems Specialist Lindsay Barrios. Barrios was born and raised in Fort Payne, Alabama. After graduating from high school, she moved to Tennessee to study geology and geography at the University of Memphis. In February of 2018, Barrios officially became a member of the USACE Memphis District team. She said she was excited to work for the Corps for many reasons, which include the district’s mission as well as the leadership present throughout each of its offices.

  • Army Corps of Engineers and Texas Parks and Wildlife Deploy Fisheries Habitat Structures at Lewisville Lake

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District’s Lewisville and Grapevine Lake staffs partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Inland Fisheries Division May 5 to deploy fisheries habitat structures at Lewisville Lake.

    U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory Research Biologist Dr. Nathan Harms co-authored a journal article as one of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Walla Walla District Wildlife Biologist Damien Walter’s 2019 ERDC University mentors.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Regulatory Division team members from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District were recently recognized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for their contributions to the MS SLOPES tool development.

  • Ron Rabena, Friends of Raystown Lake president, to receive 2021 Enduring Service Volunteer Award during Cleanup Day

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District team members will assist in presenting the Corps Foundation Enduring Service Volunteer Award to Ron Rabena, Friends of Raystown Lake (FRL) president, during the Raystown Lake annual Cleanup Day, May 1, 2021, at noon at the Tatman Run picnic shelter. The Corps Foundation is the only nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to supporting the nation's lakes, rivers and the lands surrounding them.

  • Chief of Engineers signs report recommending ecosystem restoration in Prado Basin

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ top general signed a report April 22 – on Earth Day – recommending a plan to restore more than 600 acres of valuable riparian habitat within the largest riparian forest in Southern California. Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, the Corps’ commanding general and 55th U.S. Army chief of engineers, signed the Chief of Engineer’s Report for the Prado Basin Ecosystem Restoration and Water Conservation Feasibility Study at the Corps’ headquarters in Washington, D.C. The project is headed by the Corps’ Los Angeles District, in partnership with the Orange County Water District.

  • Army Corps of Engineers and Texas Parks and Wildlife Team Up to Conserve Aquatic Resources

    In an effort to preserve the natural resources at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District’s Bardwell Lake, USACE partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to relocate aquatic wildlife as part of the lake’s emergency spillway dewater and maintenance.
