Many USACE dams have flood risk management as an authorized purpose, which means the agency uses them to help reduce flooding to downstream communities.

    Army water managers expect an atmospheric river that’s dumping heavy rain in the Pacific Northwest will help refill some reservoirs this week. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) officials anticipate this event will help bring Blue River and Dorena reservoirs up to normal lake levels for this time of year.
  • Drought, lack of measurable rain drains Willamette Valley reservoirs - Corps hosts info session

    Nearly 50 days without measurable rain, combined with hot, dry conditions, has made reservoir levels in the Willamette Valley the lowest in six years. Additionally, forecasts are not predicting enough precipitation to alleviate the ongoing drought in the Pacific Northwest. To help the public understand the conditions, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District will host an info session Thursday, Aug. 5th from 12-1 p.m. to update the public about lake levels and recreation opportunities in its 13 Willamette Valley reservoirs.

    While many people are at home working in front of a computer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have people out in the field operating equipment and facilities that, at this point in time, cannot be controlled from a workstation at home. The Graham Burke Pumping Plant is one of those “pieces” of equipment that requires people to be on-site for safe operation. Pumping Plant Operator Leaderman William “Billy” Ray and Pumping Plant Operator John “Brady” Foran are two of those valuable employees who are called upon to run one of the Corps’ most valuable facilities.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2015) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is managing releases as appropriate at its dams on the Cumberland River and its tributaries in preparation of a forecasted rainfall event Feb 10-12. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for much of the Cumberland River Basin and is forecasting the potential for some rivers and streams to surpass flood stage.

This anticipated rise in lake levels is the result of heavy rainfall in the forecast and the ongoing flooding situation on the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
